A WORK ETHIC THAT HONORS GOD

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free. Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.”
Ephesians 6:5-9 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
When we read today’s passage, it can feel jarring. Does the inclusion of these verses mean God approves of slavery? Not at all. Rather, the Holy Spirit is addressing the reality of the society in Paul’s day to show that no human system is outside the reach of God’s grace. Paul is teaching us how to live out our "New Nature" even in the most difficult and unfair social structures. Today, we can apply these principles to the way we handle our "9-to-5."
1. The Employee: Beyond "Lip-Service"
Paul challenges us to work with "all our heart" and "with enthusiasm." It’s easy to slip into a habit of doing just enough to get by—working only when the boss is watching.
The Heart Shift: Paul says we are actually "Slaves of Christ." This means your real Boss isn't the person in the corner office; it’s the King of Kings.
The "Attitude" Audit: What if you hate your job? I remember a season in college where I worked for someone, I found incredibly difficult. I had to pray through my attitude daily. I chose to fulfill my commitment and work to make that boss look good. Near the end of that season, a "dream job" opened that I didn't even apply for. I believe God honors the work ethic that honors Him.
2. The Boss: Leading with the End in Mind
If God has placed you in a position of authority, Paul has a word for you: Treat them in the same way.
* No Favorites: Remember that you and your employees have the same Master in Heaven, and He has no favorites.
The Environment of Respect: When a leader refuses to lead through threats or demeaning behavior, they create a "Spirit-filled" workplace. Respect isn't just a "nice" business practice; it’s a Kingdom requirement. When employees are valued, they don't just become more productive; they see a reflection of God's character in their leader.
The "Workplace" Audit
Whether you are the CEO or the entry-level intern, your work is a platform for your "New Nature."
The Question: If Jesus was your direct supervisor, would your effort change? If He was your employee, would your tone change?
The Move: Identify one task this week that you usually dread or "shortcut." Commit to doing it with "enthusiasm" as a private act of worship to the Lord.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, please help me to see my workplace as a mission field. Whether I am leading or following, help me to work with a heart that honors You. Forgive me for the times I’ve given 'lip-service' instead of 'heart-service.' Empower me to be a conduit of Your respect and excellence today. Amen.
