AVOID PEOPLE PLEASING TRAP

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“You yourselves know, dear brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not a failure. You know how badly we had been treated at Philippi just before we came to you and how much we suffered there. Yet our God gave us the courage to declare his Good News to you boldly, in spite of great opposition. So you can see we were not preaching with any deceit or impure motives or trickery. For we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News. Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts. Never once did we try to win you with flattery, as you well know. And God is our witness that we were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money! As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.”
1 Thessalonians 2:1-6 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
As we move into Chapter 2, Paul reminds the Thessalonians that his ministry among them didn't start in a vacuum. He had just come from being badly treated in Philippi. He had "suffered there," yet he didn't let past pain silence his current mission.
Following Jesus won't always be the popular choice, and people will often question your motives. Paul gives us three keys to standing firm:
1. Courage in the Face of Opposition
Despite past difficulties, Paul says, “God gave us the courage to declare his Good News to you boldly.” Notice he says courage was given to him. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the presence of God during it. If past rejection has caused you to pull back, ask God for a fresh impartation of boldness today.
2. The Power of Pure Motives
Supernatural courage flows from a heart with nothing to hide. Paul wasn't trying to manipulate people or get their money; he was simply "entrusted" with a message. When your primary goal is to please God, you don't have to worry about "performing" for anyone else. Pure motives act like a shield against the critics.
3. Escaping the People-Pleasing Trap
I’ll be honest—early in my ministry, I really struggled with a people-pleasing spirit. I wanted everyone to like me. But if we try to please people, we become trapped by them. Human praise is fickle. During Holy Week, the same crowd waving palm branches on Sunday was shouting "Crucify Him!" by Friday. You can be a hero one day and a zero the next. When we stop looking for human praise, we find the freedom to lead with love.
Note: This doesn't mean we should try to upset people! Leading by making everyone mad is a formula for disaster. Life is about finding the balance of being firm in truth but kind in spirit.
Today’s Reflection
The Past: Has a past pain or rejection caused you to pull back from what God wants to do in your life right now?
The Why: Check your motives today. Are you doing what you do to please God, or to earn the applause of people?
The Value: Who determines your self-worth? Is it the "fickle crowd" or the God who has already approved you?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I need Your courage today. Empower me to move forward into Your plan for my life, regardless of past pain. Keep my motives pure and help me to live for Your "well done" rather than the praise of man. Amen.
