For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13 NLT

This passage probably is one of the most misunderstood and misapplied statements of Paul. I have heard people use this passage to declare they can win at a sporting event, defeat some sickness or foe, or even close a business deal. I don’t believe this is what Paul had in mind in the context of this passage.

Paul has previously written about learning the secret of contentment. He declared he had learned to be content in any and every situation. Then he writes, “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

A good translation of this passage would be, “Through Christ, I have the strength to endure in all things.” Essentially, we can endure or bear anything that has come and will come our way through the strength Christ provides.

All of nature depends on hidden resources. The great trees send their roots down into the earth to draw up water and minerals. Rivers have their sources in the snow-capped mountains. The most important part of a tree is the part you cannot see, the root system.

In the same way the most important part of the believer’s life is the part that only God sees. It is our connection with God through His Word and the Holy Spirit that furnishes us the resources we need to survive and thrive and in a fallen world.

We are not counting on our personal strength, intellect, family of origin, good looks, or financial resources. We are putting our roots down deep into the person of Almighty God and depending on Him for our daily existence.

Holy Spirit help me to daily remember that my life flows only from Your presence in my life. I am totally dependent on You for my peace, provision, and joy. You are my source of life.
