HONOR YOUR MARRIAGE COVENANT

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“You must not commit adultery.”

Exodus 20:14 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Commandment number eight protects one of God's most sacred institutions: the covenant of marriage. Broadly defined, adultery occurs when a married person engages in sexual intimacy with someone other than their spouse.

Given all the issues in the world, why did God place marital fidelity right alongside prohibitions against murder and theft in His "Top Ten"? Why does this boundary matter so deeply to God?

1. Marriage Reflects God’s Covenant with Humanity

In Genesis 2, God creates Adam and Eve and declares that a husband and wife shall "hold fast" to one another, becoming "one flesh." Together, as male and female, they reflect the image of God. The sacred union between a husband and wife was designed from the beginning to be a living, breathing picture of the intimate relationship our Creator desires to have with us.

The Apostle Paul echoes this in Ephesians 5, commanding husbands to "love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Human marriage is an earthly shadow of a heavenly reality—God’s unyielding pursuit to be united with His people. When marriage is broken, that divine picture is distorted.

2. The High Cost of Unfaithfulness

In the ancient civil law of Israel (Leviticus 20:10), the penalty for adultery was severe reflecting the truth that unfaithfulness is not merely a private mistake between two consenting adults. It is a wrecking ball aimed at the family, the community, and the foundational bedrock of society itself. When covenant trust breaks down at home, trust erodes everywhere else.

I once knew a businessman who was launching a new partnership with a close friend. During a business trip to meet investors in another city, his partner casually invited him out to a local club to pick up women for the night. My friend was stunned that his married colleague could treat his vows so lightly.

He declined the invitation and immediately made the decision to sever their business partnership. He later told his colleague: "If you can break the most sacred promise you made to your wife, I can't trust that you'll keep your business promises to me."

Fidelity in marriage is the foundation of all human integrity.

3. Jesus Raises the Bar

Just as He did with murder, Jesus takes this commandment and shines a light into the hidden corners of the human heart:

“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” — Matthew 5:27–28 (NLT)

Jesus warns us that physical unfaithfulness always begins in the mind. Long before an affair ever happens in person, it is cultivated through unchecked flirtations, lingering looks, and secret fantasies.

How Do We Guard the Covenant?

  • Guard your heart: Avoid situations, media, or private conversations that open the door to emotional or physical intimacy with someone outside your marriage.

  • Honor your vows: Regularly remind yourself of the covenant you made to "forsake all others." If you are single, honor God by respecting the marriages of others and keeping your heart pure for the future.

  • See people, not objects: Ask yourself how you view others. Do you see human beings created in the image of God to be respected, or objects to be consumed for selfish gratification?

Reflection Questions:

  1. Are there small, subtle boundary lines (in thought life, media consumption, or work relationships) that you need to re-establish to protect your heart?

  2. How does viewing marriage as a direct reflection of "Christ and the Church" change the gravity of keeping your vows?

  3. Whether married or single, how can you practice seeing others with honor and purity this week?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me hold the covenant of marriage in the highest regard. Forgive me for any time I have allowed my mind to wander into unhealthy fantasy, compromise, or flirtation. Teach me to guard my heart, honor my commitments, and view every person through eyes of holiness, respect, and grace. Amen.
