THE EVIDENCE SURROUNDING US

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.”
Romans 1:18–21 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul makes a bold, sobering statement right at the start of this passage: God’s anger is revealed against those who "suppress the truth by their wickedness." That is a strong declaration, and it warrants a closer look.
Why is God’s judgment so clear here? Because God hasn't hidden Himself in the dark—He has written His fingerprint across creation itself.
1. God’s Truth is Obvious in Creation
Paul writes, "Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities."
In my years of pastoral ministry, I’ve often walked alongside teenagers and young adults as they navigate the transition from their parents' faith to making faith their own. This is a vital season of growth. I never fault someone for having questions or wrestling with doubts. In fact, I firmly believe that anyone who is genuinely, honestly searching for truth will ultimately land on Jesus—who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).
One of the most compelling arguments for faith is the breathtaking order of our universe, our planet, and our own bodies:
The Cosmic Balance: The basic laws of physics tell us that closed systems naturally decay toward disorder and chaos. Yet, our world displays exquisite, sustained design. The exact tilt of the earth on its axis allows life to flourish—a fraction of a degree off, and our planet would be uninhabitable.
The Complexity of Life: The intricate biological systems inside our physical bodies tell us we are not cosmic accidents, but intentionally designed creations.
To believe that all of this happened purely by random chance is like dropping watch parts into a paper bag, shaking it up, and expecting a fully functioning, ticking watch to assemble itself. Design demands a Designer.
2. The Choice to Suppress the Truth
God made evidence of His power obvious, but He also gave humanity free will. He does not force us to love or worship Him.
Throughout history, people have used their creative minds to invent excuses to ignore God or replace Him with their own homemade versions of a higher power. But Paul warns that when humanity trades the Creator for a construct of their own making, "their minds became dark and confused."
Ignoring the Creator leaves a spiritual vacuum that is inevitably filled by darkness:
Living in the Light: Jesus came as the light of the world (John 1:4–5), revealing truth and giving life.
Hiding in the Dark: Yet many choose to retreat into the shadows. Why? Because acknowledging a Sovereign Creator means admitting we are accountable to Him. If God exists, we don't get to make up our own rules or live purely for self-gratification.
Rejecting God isn't an honest intellectual obstacle—it's a moral one. It is a desire to justify selfish behavior, run our own lives, and resist any authority that tells us what is right and wrong.
Reflection & Application
Take time today to examine your heart and open your eyes to God's presence:
Are you looking for God in creation? When you look at the world around you, do you pause to appreciate the evidence of God’s handiwork with an open, thankful heart?
Are you holding honest questions or holding onto control? Is there any area of your life where you are resisting God's truth simply because you want to keep doing things your own way?
How can you help others search for truth? How can you create a safe space for friends or family members with hard questions, gently guiding them back to the truth revealed in Christ?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see You at work in creation all around me. Give me an active, grounded faith that recognizes Your divine design in every sunrise, in the order of nature, and in the gift of life.
Forgive me for the times I try to run my own life or justify my own desires above Your truth. Give me a humble heart that accepts Your Word, even when it challenges what I want in the moment.
Give me patience and wisdom to walk alongside those who are wrestling with questions, that I might help point them back to the light of Jesus. In His name, Amen.
