THE TEST OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.”
Galatians 5:24–26 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul gives us three powerful truths in this passage:
1. We must crucify the flesh
Paul contrasts the works of the flesh—anger, immorality, envy, selfishness—with the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we are all born with a sinful nature—a “virus” that corrupts God’s original design. Even after we are born again through faith in Jesus, the old habits and desires of the flesh try to rise and control us.
That’s why Paul says we must crucify the flesh. Crucifixion is not quick or easy—it’s slow, painful, and decisive. In the same way, putting to death our old nature is a process that takes daily surrender. We cannot do it in our own strength. Only the Spirit of God working in us can break the power of sin and heal its effects.
2. We must follow the Spirit’s leading
Paul says, “Let us keep in step with the Spirit.” The image is like soldiers marching in formation or a band moving in perfect rhythm. Every step is in sync.
That’s how the Christian life should look. When we yield to the Spirit’s influence, our steps align with His. And notice—Paul says this must happen in every part of our lives. Jesus does not want to be Lord of part of us, but Lord of all of us—our thoughts, words, choices, and relationships.
The more we keep in step with the Spirit, the more the flesh loses its power.
3. We must not compete with others
Paul warns against conceit, provocation, and jealousy. Those attitudes destroy unity and grieve the Spirit.
Think of an apple tree: it doesn’t grow apples for itself or to show off its beauty. The apples are for others to enjoy. In the same way, the fruit of the Spirit in us is meant to bless and nourish others—not to prove our spirituality or compete with fellow believers.
A true test of spiritual maturity is how we respond when others are blessed more than we are. Do we grow jealous, or do we rejoice with them? When we’re walking in step with the Spirit, we’ll celebrate with others, encourage them, and trust God’s timing for our own lives.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me to stay in step with You. Take control of every part of my life. Teach me to crucify the desires of the flesh and live in Your power. Please help me to celebrate when others are blessed, knowing that You are working all things for my good as well. Amen.
