THE GIFT OF FAITH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What did he discover about being made right with God? If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the Scriptures tell us, ‘Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.’

When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. David also spoke of this when he described the happiness of those who are declared righteous without working for it:

‘Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.’”

TODAY’S THOUGHT

To prove that salvation has always been by faith and never by works, Paul brings out his two strongest witnesses: Abraham (the father of the nation) and King David (Israel’s greatest king).

If anyone could have claimed spiritual credit based on their heritage or accomplishments, it was these two icons of Jewish history. Yet Paul points out that both Abraham and David experienced right standing with God through unearned faith and forgiveness.

The Target Gift Card Analogy:

Imagine an 8-year-old receiving a birthday card containing a pre-loaded $50 gift card to Target. They love the beautiful card and admire the shiny plastic gift card, but they just slip it into a dresser drawer. Occasionally, they pull it out to look at it, but they never take it to the store.

That gift card was loaded with real value meant to be used! It wasn't given simply to be admired; it was given as a tool to empower them to get something they needed or wanted.

This is precisely what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. Salvation is a pre-funded, fully paid gift. But to experience the joy, peace, and freedom of that gift, we must actively receive it and live in it by faith.

1. Zero Room for Human Pride

Paul reminds us that when you work a normal job, your paycheck isn't a "gift"—it is wages you earned. But righteousness before God cannot be worked for.

Abraham couldn't boast about earning his salvation. Genesis 15:6 declares that Abraham simply believed God, and God credited that faith to his account as righteousness.

We cannot boast about receiving a gift we didn't earn. We are saved not by the work of our hands, but by placing our trust in the God who freely forgives sinners.

2. Rejoicing in a Cleared Record

Paul quotes King David from Psalm 32 to show that even under the Old Covenant, true joy came from unearned mercy. David knew the crushing weight of sin, but he experienced the immense relief of having his record completely cleared by God.

It can be difficult for our human minds to comprehend that in Christ, God has cleared our record of sin. You don't have to spend your life on a spiritual treadmill trying to work off your past guilt. The debt has been erased, and the account is settled.

3. Exercising Faith: Thinking as God Thinks

Where does our part come in? We must exercise faith.

Years ago, I adopted a simple definition of faith: faith is the ability to think as God thinks.

Because we are born with a fallen nature, our default human setting is to view ourselves, our circumstances, and other people through a sin-distorted lens. We naturally gravitate toward self-reliance, fear, and performance-based living.

When we accept God's plan of salvation, the Holy Spirit begins the lifelong process of renewing our minds (Romans 12:2):

• Faith equips us to view our lives from God’s perspective rather than our own limited human reasoning.

• Because we have been programmed by a broken world, renewing our minds requires daily immersion in God's Word.

• This is a continual, ongoing journey. On this side of eternity, we are always in process, learning every day to trade human panic for divine truth.

Reflection & Application

• Whose perspective is guiding your daily thoughts? When facing challenges, is your mind controlled more by human circumstances and fear, or by what God says in His Word?

• Are you still trying to "work off" your past mistakes? Have you fully embraced the joy David spoke of—knowing that in Christ, your record has been completely cleared?

• Are you actively using the "gift card" of grace? Are you merely admiring the doctrine of salvation, or are you walking daily in the practical freedom, peace, and identity Jesus purchased for you?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, open my mind daily to see my life, my circumstances, and my future from Your perspective. Teach me to think as You think, trading my human anxiety for Your steadfast truth.

Thank You that my salvation is a gift I could never earn. Thank You for clearing my record of sin and clothing me in the righteousness of Christ.

Forgive me for the times I lapse into self-reliance, fear, or worldly thinking. Renew my mind today, strengthen my faith eyesight, and help me walk boldly in the freedom You have provided. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
