DOING GOD’S WILL GOD’S WAY

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “The Lord has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal.

Genesis 16:1-2 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

There is real danger in trying to help God! I believe there is a part we play in seeing the kingdom of God come on the earth. We must commit ourselves to be obedient to the Word of God. We must commit to share God’s love with others in our world. We must discipline ourselves to grow in our knowledge and understanding of God. But we have to be careful we don’t substitute our plan for God’s plan. No passage in scripture paints a more perfect example of this truth than today’s passage. Abram and Sarai had been given a promise that they will have a son and through that son a great nation will arise. But over 10 years have passed, and it doesn’t look like anything is happening. Abram is somewhere in his mid-80s by now. Sarai is credited with presenting a plan to help fulfill the promise of God through her Egyptian servant. This was a common practice of the day even though it seems horrible to us. While it may have been acceptable in their society this was not God’s plan. not everything that society accepts is acceptable to God. We should never allow society to establish our moral behavior., We are called to a higher purpose. It is dangerous to try to accomplish God’s will in our own way. His ways are a lot better than our ways. In this passage we see Abram having a child through his wife’s Egyptian servant. The event occurred almost 4000 years ago, and the consequences are still with us today. It was through that child a nation was raised up that today is still in conflict with the Jewish nation that came later through the womb of Sarai. The consequences of trying to force God’s will through human intervention always leads to sad consequences. Let’s be careful we do God’s will God’s way.
