TEST YOUR LIGHT

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.”

1 John 2:9-11 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Yesterday we looked at this passage and presented the challenge of loving even those who disagree with us. To help us move from "being right" to "being light," here is a Unity Audit. This is a practical tool for evaluating the health of our relationships and our online presence.

The Unity Audit: Testing Your Light

Before you post a comment, send a text, or engage in a debate, run your heart through these three diagnostic filters.

1. The "Blind Spot" Check

  • The Question: Am I reacting to a person's character or just their category?

  • The Reflection: Sometimes we "hate" a fellow believer simply because they belong to a different denomination, political party, or worship style. If your frustration is based on a label rather than a personal interaction, you might be walking in darkness.

  • The Word: "Stop judging by mere appearances but instead judge correctly." (John 7:24)

2. The "Stumble" Test

  • The Question: Will my words help this person grow, or will they cause a "spectator" (a seeker or a young believer) to stumble?

  • The Reflection: The world is watching how we treat each other. John says those in the light do not cause others to stumble. If your public "correction" of another Christian makes the Gospel look unattractive to an outsider, it's time to dim the fire.

  • The Word: "Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble." (1 John 2:10)

3. The "Walmart Rule" Application

  • The Question: If I post this or say this, will I have to dodge this person in the grocery store next week?

  • The Reflection: Online courage often masks offline cowardice. If you wouldn't say it to their face with a spirit of gentleness, don't say it behind a screen.

  • The Word: "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt..." (Colossians 4:6)

This Week's Challenge

Go through your social media feed or your recent text history. If you find a "dark" comment or an unloving interaction, don't just ignore it. Reach out, apologize, or delete the post. Choose to be a person who makes light easier to see.

The Peace-Maker’s Template

Reconciliation doesn't mean you now agree on everything; it means you agree that Christ is bigger than your disagreement. Use this 3-sentence framework to reach out to a brother or sister you’ve been "dodging."

The Script

  1. The Acknowledgement: "I’ve been reflecting on our recent [conversation/interaction], and I realize that my tone/attitude didn't reflect the love I have for you as a fellow believer."

  2. The Value Statement: "Even though we might see [theological issue/topic] differently, I value our relationship far more than being 'right' in a debate."

  3. The Invitation: "I’d love to move past this and keep walking in the light together—can we grab a coffee or just commit to a fresh start?"

The Anatomy of a Peace-Maker

Why This Works

  • It lowers the "Stonewall": By starting with your own attitude rather than their "wrongness," you remove their need to defend themselves.

  • It Identifies the Real Enemy: It reminds both parties that the enemy is the "darkness" of division, not each other.

  • It Honors the "Walmart Rule": It clears the air so that you can walk into any room (or grocery store) with a clear conscience and a tender heart.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." — Matthew 5:9

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit please help me to be a person of love. Give me the courage to exam my interactions and make right where I have blown it. Help me demonstrate Your love to my world.

GREAT personal application of the Word! I needed to hear this; it made me skirm.
