FROM CHAOS TO ORDER

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Genesis 1:1-3 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The Bible does not begin with an attempt to prove the existence of God. The Bible opens with, “In the beginning God….” The reality of God is something that is accepted by faith. We can use human logic to argue for the existence of God but in the end, everyone must accept God’s existence by personal faith. You can’t argue someone into believing in God. You can present arguments, but these persons must choose to accept God as being real. The writer tells us that before God stepped in, the earth was “formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters.” I am told that in Hebrew the wording used here is an expression of chaos and something void of order. Before God stepped in there was no order in creation. That is much like our lives. Many of us recognize that without the presence of God in our lives we fall into chaos and confusion. We lack order and meaning. Into this chaos the Spirit of God comes and begins to hover “over the surface of the waters.” God’s Spirit is present to prepare the chaos for the Creator. It is the same way for us. The Spirit of God steps into our hearts full of sin and darkness and brings conviction—a sense that we need to change. It is the Holy Spirit that begins the process of transformation. Then God speaks. God chose to use the medium of the spoken word to be the tool for transformation. Scripture tells us there is the power of life and death in our tongues (Proverbs 18:21). In the New Testament we learn that faith comes by hearing the Word (Romans 10:17)—that Word must be spoken to be heard. God literally created everything out of nothing. He spoke and all that is came into being. I believe God has given our tongues creative power. When we put our tongues into alignment with God’s Word, we can speak order into our chaos. We can release light into our darkness. We can release wholeness into sickness. We can release provision into poverty. There is creative power within us that is waiting to be released through our mouths. Let’s be part of God’s creative work in our world by releasing life.
