BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
Mark 15:37-38 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
The details that Mark puts in his narrative of the crucifixion are worth noting. In both Mark and Matthew, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple is torn from “top to bottom.” In Exodus 26 God gave instructions for building the original Tabernacle to Moses. There was a very thick curtain between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. The Holy of Holies housed the Ark of the Covenant. Once a year, and only once a year, the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies and sprinkle the blood of the Passover lamb over the mercy seat on top of the Ark of the Covenant. God had declared that He would dwell above the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant. There was a special presence of God in the Holy of Holies. In Jesus’ day the Temple in Jerusalem was built according to the same blueprint God gave Moses. Within the Temple was the Holy of Holies. There was a thick curtain that stood at the entrance to that special place. This is the curtain that was torn from top to bottom. As Jesus died for the sins of the world, He opened access to Father God for all men. The curtain in the Temple being torn was a physical manifestation of what was occurring in the spiritual realm. God opened His presence for all mankind. Through Jesus we now have access to the presence of God. In Hebrews we are told we can now enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19). The death of Jesus paid the price for our admission into the presence of Father God. Let’s not allow our past failures to block our present access. Let’s daily visit with Abba Father. Let’s listen to His wisdom, direction, and correction for our lives. Let’s spend time in worship and the Word in the presence of our Heavenly Father.
