PUT ON SPIRITUAL ARMOR

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:13-17 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

No soldier goes into battle without their armor.

The Apostle Paul understood spiritual warfare intimately. As a missionary and church planter, he fought countless battles in both the physical and spiritual realms. Interestingly, he wrote this letter from a prison cell, likely chained to a Roman soldier. As Paul looked at the guard's uniform, the Holy Spirit gave him a brilliant visual metaphor for our own spiritual defense.

Let's break down the pieces of our spiritual armor:

1. The Belt of Truth

For a Roman soldier, the heavy leather belt was the anchor. It held his weapons securely and tucked up his long robes so he could move quickly and freely in battle without tripping. Spiritually, the belt of truth represents integrity. When we live authentic, honest lives before God and others, our spiritual armor holds together. A lack of integrity creates a loose, sloppy defense that trips us up when the battle heats up.

2. The Body Armor of Righteousness

The breastplate protected the soldier's vital organs, especially the heart. This isn't about our righteousness—which scripture says is like filthy rags—but God's righteousness. Jesus took our sin so that we could receive His perfect standing (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we confess and repent, this gift of grace protects the most vital parts of our inner life. We can stand secure, knowing we are fully accepted and right with God.

3. The Shoes of Peace

Roman soldiers wore heavy sandals with thick leather soles studded with metal nails. These acted like cleats, giving them an unshakeable grip so they wouldn't slip or be pushed back in the heat of combat. When we allow the peace of God to reign in our lives, we become spiritually unshakeable. We can stand our ground with a peace that passes all human understanding, peace that firmly anchors our hearts and minds.

4. The Shield of Faith

A Roman shield (scutum) was large and made of multiple layers of wood and animal hide bound together. It was thick, heavy, and nearly as strong as steel. Before a battle, soldiers would soak their shields in water so that when the enemy launched flaming arrows, the wet leather would instantly extinguish the fire.

As spirit-filled believers, we build up layers of faith through a lifetime of walking with God and studying His Word. When our faith is continuously "soaked" in Scripture, every flaming lie, doubt, or accusation Satan tosses at us is immediately extinguished upon impact.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

Salvation is a gift of pure grace, purchased by the blood of Jesus. This helmet protects our minds. Because of Christ's sacrifice, we have been given access to a brand-new way of thinking. We are no longer trapped by old, toxic thought patterns; we are daily being transformed by the renewing of our minds. To win the battle, we must guard our thoughts and filter them daily through the reality of our salvation.

6. The Sword of the Spirit

Notice that we only have one offensive weapon: the Sword of the Spirit, which Paul explicitly states is the Word of God. Our ultimate offensive strategy against the enemy is our active knowledge and use of Scripture.

When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He didn't argue or debate; His sole weapon was quoting the written Word of God. This is our blueprint. We must not only know the Word, but we must also speak it aloud. There is immense, supernatural power behind the spoken Word of God.

Personal Application Questions:

  1. Which piece of armor feels a bit weak or missing in your life right now? Are you struggling with your thought life (Helmet), a lack of peace (Shoes), or a specific compromise in integrity (Belt)?

  2. What practical step can you take today to strengthen that piece of armor? Do you need to memorize a specific verse, take a break from negative influences, or spend focused time in prayer?

TODAY'S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see where my spiritual armor might be lacking today. Help me to intentionally and consciously put on every single piece as I prepare for the day ahead. Teach me how to walk in integrity, rest in Your righteousness, stand on Your peace, lift my faith, guard my mind, and skillfully wield Your Word against the enemy's lies. Amen.
