THE STILL QUIET VOICE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper… And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
1 Kings 19:11–13 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Do you believe God still speaks today?
How does He speak to us?
I believe God is speaking more often than we realize—we just aren’t listening. In our world, silence feels uncomfortable. Our culture thrives on noise, constant input, and busy schedules. But what if we’re missing the voice of God because we’re not still enough to hear it?
In the Old Testament, when God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, it was dramatic—thunder, lightning, thick cloud, and the sound of a trumpet (Exodus 19:16). The earth trembled as God gave the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20). It was awe-inspiring, terrifying, and unmistakable.
Fast forward about 400 years, and now Elijah stands on that same mountain—Mount Sinai (also called Horeb). Once again, there’s a mighty wind, an earthquake, and fire. Elijah had seen God move through fire before, when he called down fire from heaven in a showdown with the prophets of Baal. But this time, God wasn’t in the dramatic displays. This time, God was in the gentle whisper.
Elijah, now weary, afraid, and deeply depressed, was ready to give up. Yet even in that state, he recognized God’s voice—not in the chaos, but in the stillness.
What about you? Are you making time to hear the whisper?
God may choose to speak through big moments, but more often, He speaks in quiet ones—in the whisper of His Spirit, through His Word, through a moment of prayer or reflection.
To hear Him, we must slow down, quiet the noise, and tune our ears to His voice.
Are you creating space to hear Him?
Reflection Questions
• What distractions keep me from hearing God’s voice?
• When was the last time I was still enough to hear a whisper?
• What step can I take today to quiet my heart and listen?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I need You to tune my ears to hear Your gentle whisper. Help me to turn off the distractions and make room for stillness. Teach me to lean in, listen closely, and follow Your voice. I don’t want to miss what You’re saying. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
