THE STAFF, THE SERPENT AND ALMIGHTY GOD

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Pharaoh will demand, ‘Show me a miracle.’ When he does this, say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.’” So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the Lord had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent! Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic. They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents! But then Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. Pharaoh’s heart, however, remained hard. He still refused to listen, just as the Lord had predicted.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn, and he still refuses to let the people go. So go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes down to the river. Stand on the bank of the Nile and meet him there. Be sure to take along the staff that turned into a snake. Then announce to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you, “Let my people go, so they can worship me in the wilderness.” Until now, you have refused to listen to him. So this is what the Lord says: “I will show you that I am the Lord.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood. The fish in it will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink any water from the Nile.’””
Exodus 7:8-18 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
God sends Moses and Aaron back into the throne room of the most powerful empire on earth at the time. However, the pleasantries are over. God prepares His leaders for a direct display of power, initiating a supernatural clash between the kingdom of heaven and the dark spiritual forces of Egypt.
This dramatic confrontation reveals three vital truths about spiritual warfare and divine authority:
1. Consecrating Ordinary Tools
God instructs Moses to bring the staff. Throughout the Exodus narrative, the staff is the primary instrument used to release God’s miracles—in fact, it is used to initiate six of the ten coming plagues. Whether the text is referring to the original shepherd's rod Moses carried at the bush or a matching staff held by Aaron, the principle remains identical: God delights in using ordinary things to accomplish extraordinary feats.
A shepherd’s staff was a common, dusty, everyday tool of a low-class laborer. But once it was fully surrendered to God, it became an instrument of the supernatural. Whatever God wants to accomplish through your life, He has likely already placed the tool for it in your hand. It may look like a natural talent, a professional skill, a life experience, or an ordinary resource. He isn't waiting for you to become someone else; He is waiting for you to submit what you already have.
2. Confronting the Counterfeit
When Aaron throws down his staff and it transforms into a slithering serpent, Pharaoh's court magicians use demonic parlor tricks to duplicate the miracle. Later, when the Nile is struck and turns to blood, the magicians mimic that as well.
This is a sobering reminder for modern believers: Not every miracle originates from God. The enemy possesses real, deceptive power and will gladly use counterfeits to cause confusion, dilute truth, and keep people in bondage.
But look at the ultimate outcome: Aaron’s snake methodically swallows up the magicians' snakes. God doesn't just defeat the enemy; He completely consumes him. Satan can copy, but he can never compete. His power has a definitive boundary, and God will always have the final, authoritative word.
3. The Tragedy of a Hardened Heart
Despite watching his magicians' staves get swallowed whole, Pharaoh refuses to bow. He is utterly unshakeable in his pride. He cannot stomach the idea of losing his massive slave labor force, nor can his ego handle submitting to a God he claims not to know.
God created the human heart with a free will. He will invite us, convict us, and confront us, but He will never force our compliance. Pharaoh chose a pattern of stubbornness that eventually turned his heart into stone. Every time we hear the truth and willfully choose to ignore it, our hearts become more resilient to the voice of God.
Personal Application
In my experience I’ve seen that spiritual warfare is rarely loud and obvious. More often, it looks like the enemy trying to convince you that your small acts of obedience don't matter or trying to match God's voice with worldly noise and distractions.
Don't let the enemy confuse you. Look at what is in your hand today. Have you fully surrendered your talents, your finances, and your daily schedule to the Lord? When you yield your ordinary "staff" to Him, you give the Holy Spirit permission to display His consuming power through your life.
Questions for Reflection
Tool Check: What ordinary gift, talent, or resource has God given me that I am still withholding from His service?
Discerning the Noise: Am I easily distracted or confused by the secular counterfeits of our culture, or can I clearly recognize the supreme power of God?
Softness Scale: Is there an area of my life where I am growing stubborn or resistant to God's instructions? Am I protecting my own ego instead of yielding to His will?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I lift the ordinary tools, talents, and resources of my life and place them fully in Your hands. Use them for Your glory. Give me a sharp spirit of discernment so that I am never deceived by the counterfeits of the enemy. Keep my heart soft, moldable, and quick to obey Your voice today. Amen.
