SEEKING THE RAW GLORY OF GOD
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” The Lord replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Following the catastrophic failure of the golden calf, God reassures Moses that the rescue mission will still move forward. He promises to send an angel to drive out their enemies and clear a path to the Promised Land. But Moses flatly refuses to pack up his bags for a mere angel. He knows that a map, a destination, and a heavenly bodyguard are completely empty if God Himself is not in the camp.
Standing in the Tent of Meeting, Moses draws a hard line in the sand and makes some of the boldest, most transparent requests in human history:
1. The Dynamic Distinction of Presence
Moses makes a striking declaration to the Almighty: “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. “Moses understood a truth that many modern believers completely miss, it was not Israel’s military might, their vast numbers, or their cultural sophistication that made them unique. It was the physical, tangible presence of God dwelling in their midst.
Moses knew that his elite Egyptian education, his natural charisma, and his organizational skills were utterly useless for the journey ahead if God stayed behind. The presence of God is the only asset that truly sets the believer apart from the rest of the world. Without Him, we are just an ordinary crowd trying to do good deeds.
2. The Intimacy of Being Known by Name
God answers Moses’ fierce plea with a beautiful, tender reassurance: “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.”
To be known "by name" by the Creator of the Universe is the ultimate marker of deep, covenant intimacy. God was not treating Moses like an anonymous project manager or a replaceable servant. He was revealing a unique, personal relationship anchored in love. This is the exact same intimacy we are invited into today—we are not just numbers in a global church; we are children known intimately by our Father.
3. The Holy Appetite for Glory
Instead of stepping back, satisfied that God has agreed to go with them, Moses gets even bolder. He presses further into the throne room and makes the ultimate request: “Then show me your glorious presence.”
By this point in the journey, Moses wrestled with Pharaoh, watched a nation panic at the Red Sea, and endured a mutiny at the base of the mountain. He looks down the road at the thousands of miles of rugged desert ahead and realizes that human endurance will never sustain him. He recognizes that he desperately needs a personal, overwhelming encounter with the raw glory of God to permanently anchor his soul for the impossible task of leading a stubborn people.
Personal Application
In my years of walking with the Lord, I have learned a sobering truth: it is dangerously easy to try to accomplish God's destiny for our lives using our own natural resources. We lean on our intellect, our academic degrees, our financial safety nets, or our personal talents to build our lives.
While God will gladly use and refine your natural abilities, they are wholly insufficient to sustain a supernatural life. If you try to build a family, a career, or a ministry on your own strength, you will eventually burn out in the desert. We must cultivate an absolute desperation for the presence of God, developing a holy stubbornness that refuses to take a single step forward in life unless He goes before us.
We need personal encounters with His glory. While these moments occasionally happen in corporate church services, they are most deeply forged in the quiet, hidden spaces of your daily routine—in the early morning hours where you shut out the world, open the Word, and simply wait on Him.
Questions for Reflection
Hard Line: Have I reached a place of spiritual desperation where I can honestly say to God, "If You don't go with me into this new career, this relationship, or this decision, I refuse to move"?
Resource Inventory: Am I relying more on my own education, talents, and financial security to get me through life than I am on the daily power of the Holy Spirit?
Glory Appetite: Am I truly hungry for a deeper, personal experience of God's presence, or have I become satisfied with just a casual, long-distance relationship with Him?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, ignite a fresh, unquenchable hunger for Your presence within my soul today. Forgive me for the times I have run ahead of You, trying to manage my life, my family, and my challenges through my own limited strength. I declare today that my talents and intellect are not enough. I need Your personal guidance, Your uncompromised truth, and Your glorious presence to go before me. Anchor my heart in intimacy with You today. Amen.
