STAY SALTY

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.

Mark 9:50 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Jesus taught us that as followers of Christ we are the salt of the earth. In His day salt was a very important commodity. In this passage Jesus tells us that salt must maintain its integrity, or it loses its value. In the ancient world they used salt as a preservative. They didn’t have refrigerators to keep meat, so they would rub the meat with salt to preserve the meat. As the salt of the earth, we are responsible to keep corruption from defiling our world. We are to be the protectors of the moral fiber of our world. Salt was also used to clean and close wounds. It was a natural way of keeping out infection and closing cuts. In the same way we are supposed to be doing that for our world. We are to bring help and healing to the broken and wounded. But there was also a third thing salt did—and does. It was a thirst-creator. A cowboy once heard me teaching on salt and came up afterwards to tell me about the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” The cowboy told me that any good cowboy knows that is a lie. You can make a horse drink if you put some salt in his oats. I believe we are to be God’s salt in our world. Enticing people to drink the eternal water that flows from the Lord Jesus Christ. This is living water. There should be something about my life that makes others want to drink what I have.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me to stay salty. Help me to keep You in my life so that I am effective in impacting my world.
