PROTECT THE UNITY OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

Genesis 2:18 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The only thing in all of God’s creation that was “not good” was that man was alone. God saw this and decided to make a “helper” for the man.

This word we translate as “helper” is never used in the scripture in any context to be “servant.” The word literally means one come helps.

I believe this is a mutual help. The woman helps the man, and the man helps the woman. There is completion and equipping in the relationship between a man and woman committed to each other in a marriage relationship.

This completion and equipping come into play in many areas of our lives, including our need for direction from God.

As I write this devotion, I think about a young couple that came up for prayer recently. They wanted prayer about the sale of their home and direction for their next move. I took the opportunity to pray for wisdom and unity as they embark on this major transition in their lives. I believe it is important to have both as a married couple.

If both husband and wife are believers and interested in God’s direction in their lives, then they should seek unity in any and every decision. If they are not in unity they should pause until they have unity.

If two people are listening to God for direction He will confirm for each of them the direction. If I feel that we should do a certain thing, and Cindy feels different I wait. Either I will change, or she will change. God can tell me I need to change the way I’m thinking about it, or God can change her way of thinking.

It is always important to protect the unity of our relationship. We can trust God to speak to us and guide us with His wisdom.

If you are not married seek some godly counsel from someone who loves you, wants the best for you, and hears from God. Don’t seek wisdom from someone who has messed up their own life—that should be an obvious clue they have no ability to listen to the Spirit of God. It would be like seeking marriage advice to someone who has been divorced five times.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me to listen to Your voice. Help me to listen to Your wisdom through the helper You have given to me in my spouse. Help me to protect the unity of my marriage.
