A POWERFUL DESCRIPTION OF CHRIST

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

Colossians 1:15-20 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

This passage is one of the most powerful descriptions of who Jesus Christ truly is. The Apostle Paul declares that Christ is not just a teacher or prophet—He is the supreme Sovereign over all creation.

Seven Truths About Christ from Colossians 1:15–20

Paul reveals seven powerful truths about the identity and work of Jesus:

1. Image of the Invisible God – Jesus makes the unseen God visible. If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.

2. Firstborn over All Creation – Not created, but preeminent—He ranks above all creation in authority and honor.

3. Creator of All Things – Jesus created everything—things we can see and things we can’t, both physical and spiritual.

4. Sustainer of the Universe – He holds all things together. Every breath, every heartbeat, every star in the sky—held by Christ.

5. Head of the Church – He leads and directs His people, the body of believers worldwide.

6. Firstborn from the Dead – His resurrection is the first of many. He is the source of our hope in eternal life.

7. Fullness of God in Him – Jesus is not just like God—He is God in full.

These truths remind us that Jesus is not merely part of our faith—He is the center of it.

Why This Matters

Paul is emphasizing that Christ was not a created being. In the original Greek, it is crystal clear: Jesus existed before all things. He is not one of many; He is above all. This counters the false teaching (like that of the Jehovah’s Witnesses) that Jesus was created. Scripture doesn’t say He created “other” things—it says everything was created through Him and for Him.

Jesus Reveals the Father

Jesus is the clearest picture we have of God. We can’t fully know God unless we know Jesus. He is the “visible image” of the invisible God. That means when we study Jesus—His compassion, His wisdom, His power—we are learning the very nature of God.

“The more time we spend getting to know Jesus, the better we will know God.”

The Power of Reconciliation

Through Jesus’ death on the cross, God reconciled all things to Himself. That includes you. If you feel far from God, Jesus has already made peace available through His blood. Your part is to believe and receive that peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, help me to develop a deeper understanding of the person and work of Jesus. Open my heart to the truth of who He is. As I grow in knowing Christ, help me to better grasp the love, grace, and character of my Heavenly Father. Amen.
