GOD AND TIME WILL REVEAL THE TRUTH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and a fool.
Proverbs 19:1 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some of Solomon’s proverbs take a moment to really sink in. This is one of them.
When we think about dishonest people, our minds often jump to politicians, used car salesmen, or drug dealers — that might top our list. But if we pause long enough, we realize that dishonesty isn’t limited to “those” people. Most of us, at some point, have bent the truth — maybe not to deceive, but to please others or avoid discomfort.
As a people-pleaser, I’ve had moments when I didn’t tell the whole truth — perhaps when someone asked for my opinion about their appearance or behavior. I might have left a few details out to keep the peace. Does that put me in the group I just mentioned? Maybe not entirely, but it reminds me that integrity is tested in the small things as much as in the big ones.
Being a person of integrity is something we all say we value. Yet when the “rubber meets the road,” it’s tempting to shade the truth to make ourselves look better. We wouldn’t call it lying — just “editing.” But Solomon’s proverb challenges that mindset.
He’s asking: Are we willing to play the long game of honesty, even when it costs us something in the short term?
Honesty can cost us — a friendship, a promotion, or even a financial opportunity. But dishonesty carries a far greater cost. In time, truth always surfaces. When it does, those who lied lose credibility, and people no longer trust them. The Bible calls that person a fool — not because they lacked intelligence, but because they traded integrity for short-term gain.
Living honestly is really a matter of faith — trusting that God keeps the books balanced. My dad used to say, “God keeps good records. He always balances the books. It may not be at the end of the week, month, or year, but He will reveal the truth.”
A wise counselor once told me, “God and time always reveal the truth.” And that’s why it’s better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and a fool.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me to trust that truth is always the best strategy. Give me the courage to be honest, even when it costs me something in the moment. Help me to walk in integrity and faith, knowing You keep the record and reveal the truth in Your time.
