GROW SPIRITUALLY
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
Ephesians 4:21-27 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
This is a passage that could take a while to digest. It might be worth reading through a few times to really think about all the Holy Spirit is telling us through Paul.
When I read this passage, several things jump out at me, but I want to focus on one thought—we can’t grow spiritually mature in a vacuum!
In some religions the most holy people are those who isolate themselves from society and live in monasteries separate from society. But in Christianity we discover that becoming like Christ involves constant interaction with other people.
We don’t really realize the lust, deception, and anger in our lives until we interact with other people. Spending time with others reveals what is really in our heart.
Learning to get along with people who think and act different than us requires a great amount of maturity and growth. God uses His Word, people, and circumstances to mold us. All three are indispensable for character development.
God’s Word provides the truth which is the foundation for our lives. God’s people provide the support we need to grow. Circumstances in life provide the environment to practice being like Christ.

When I take time to study God’s Word to develop my world mindset, connect regularly with other believers, and learn to trust God in difficult circumstances, I will become more like Jesus. I don’t really grow to be like Jesus in isolation. I learn to be like Jesus when I encounter difficult people and difficult circumstances.
If you are walking through a difficult time in life you can rejoice in the knowledge this is a great chance to grow. We don’t grow much when times are easy and smooth. We grow the best through the trials of life. Embrace the challenge. On the other side you will be more like Jesus.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit help me to see how I need to grow through this season in my life. Help me work each day to become more like Jesus.
