TEACHER AND GUIDE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

"Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. 'Follow me and be my disciple,' Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him."

Mark 2:13–14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

As word of Jesus’ authority and miracles spread, massive crowds flocked to Him by the Sea of Galilee. Yet in the middle of public ministry, Jesus paused to make an extraordinary personal call to an unlikely individual.

This brief encounter highlights three powerful truths about Jesus' mission:

1. Miracles Draw, but Truth Transforms

While the crowds often pursued Jesus for physical healing, Jesus constantly directed them back to the Word. Miracles meet immediate, temporal needs, but teaching brings lasting spiritual transformation.

Jesus wants to do more than resolve our immediate problems—He wants to renew our minds so that we learn to think, love, and live according to Kingdom truth.

2. Jesus Sees Beyond Reputation

In first-century Judea, tax collectors were deeply despised. Seen as extortionists and traitors collaborating with Roman occupiers, they were barred from synagogue worship and treated as social outcasts.

Yet when Jesus walked past Levi’s booth, He didn't look with judgment; He looked with divine discernment (eiden). Where society saw a greedy traitor, Jesus saw a heart longing for redemption and purpose.

3. Radical Grace Inspires Immediate Surrender

Jesus' invitation was simple yet revolutionary: "Follow me and be my disciple." Levi didn't hesitate—he walked away from a lucrative career and financial security on the spot.

This encounter transformed Levi into Matthew, a name meaning "Gift of God." The despised tax collector became the disciple who would write the first Gospel of the New Testament. Jesus never sees us merely for who we are today; He sees who we can become through His grace.

Questions for Reflection

  • Mindset: Am I intentionally placing myself under the teaching of God's Word so my mind can be continuously renewed?

  • Perspective: Do I allow political, social, or cultural biases to prevent me from seeing people through the eyes of Jesus?

  • Surrender: Is there anything in my life—like comfort, career, or security—that I hesitate to leave behind to follow Christ more fully?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, be my Teacher and Guide. Renew my mind daily through Your Word so that my thoughts, choices, and actions reflect Your Kingdom.

Give me eyes of compassion to see people as You see them—looking beyond outward appearances, past mistakes, and cultural labels to see their God-given potential.

Thank You for seeing me, calling me, and giving me a new identity in Christ. Amen.
