VICTORY THROUGH FAITH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

1 John 5:4-5 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

For those who have chosen to be a follower of Jesus—you are an overcomer! There is nothing in this world that can defeat you. God has declared that His children are victorious. Even though at times it appears we may be losing, we know that in the end WE WIN. This may sound like empty words to the person who has just lost a loved one, a job, a relationship, or gotten a bad report from the doctor. Because our eyes can only see in the physical realm and at one point in time, we may feel like losers. But there is more than the physical and the now. There are many things that will happen in our lives that we will not understand. The concept of a loving God allowing intense pain and loss to occur in our lives is hard for the human mind to grasp or understand. I have given up trying to make sense of everything that happens. Just before I wrote today’s devotion, I received a prayer request from a lady for her friend. Her friend was pregnant with twins and lost one baby just prior to birth. The other twin just passed away at five months old. The friend is struggling to understand why God would allow this to happen. There are no easy answers—and I’m not sure if on this side of eternity our brains can have any answer. This is where faith comes into play. Our text says, “we achieve this victory through our faith.” God understands our limited human intellect. He knows we live in an imperfect world that has been corrupted by sin. He knows we can’t always understand. But He asks us to live by faith. By faith we believe we are victorious when we don’t feel victorious. By faith we believe Jesus has conquered every pain and disappointment of life. By faith we declare that we are winners—even if we feel like losers.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit please help my limited understanding. When possible, help me see my circumstances from God’s perspective. When I can’t understand or see—help me to live by faith. Help me to believe in the love of God.
