THE TRUTH IN HIS WORD
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.
James 1:16-18 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
I get so wrapped up in the book of James that every verse seems to speak practical truth into my life. Here we see the continuation of yesterday’s devotion. James told us yesterday that God does not tempt us—temptation is the result of Satan appealing to our natural desires to lure us to fulfill those desires in an ungodly way.
Today James tells us it is God Who gives us every “good and perfect” gift. The greatest gift that God gives us is His “true word.” Yesterday we learned that Satan is the deceiver who tricks us with worms on hooks. But God gives us truth. His Word shows us how to live a life of fulfillment and freedom.
When we spend time in God’s Word, we begin to see the lies that Satan and society are trying to sell. We recognize the false advertisement of sin and choose instead to have our God-given desires fulfilled in a godly way.
Our desires are not wrong. There is just the battle in how we will fulfill those desires. When we allow our thinking to be shaped by the Word of God, we discover there are healthy ways to fulfill desires.
God’s Word gives us the birth of life—true life. Life that is ours because we are God’s prized possession. Recognize today that God has chosen you to be His prized possession. He wants you to live in freedom and fullness. He wants you to enjoy life to the fullness without the bondage of sin.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit thanks for living in me and working through me to fulfill God’s plan and purpose in my life. Thanks for empowering me to know God’s Word and live it daily.
