COMMITMENT AND FULFILLMENT
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live,
2 Peter 3:11 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you committed to?
Often, we have dueling commitments in our lives. We commit to serving God as a follower of Jesus but then we also commit to activities that feed our flesh. We say we are committed to be a Christ follower but then skip church or small group because our life is too busy. Our busy life is a reflection that we have committed our time to something we consider more valuable than God.
We are the sum of whatever we are committed to. Twenty years from today your life will be the results of whatever you choose to commit to today. It works in marriage, parenting, our physical body, our spiritual life, our financial life, and our relationships.
Many people struggle with half-hearted commitments to competing values, which lead to frustration and mediocrity. Others make a full commitment to worldly goals, such as becoming wealthy or famous, and end up disappointed and bitter.
Peter reminds us that this world is temporary and “is going to be destroyed.” Our bank accounts, houses, cars, and stocks will all disappear at some point. If we have committed the priority of our time and energy on the accumulation of stuff, we will be very disappointed in the end.
But what if we make becoming like Jesus the top priority of our commitments? What if we commit to daily spend time in God’s Word and in prayer? What if we commit to develop the character of Christ in our lives by loving and serving others?
We may not have the nicest house or newest car, but we will be able to sleep well at night. We will find a satisfaction and fulfillment this temporary world can’t offer.
What are you committed to? Check your calendar and checking account to see if what you say you are committed to is what your investments of time and treasure say you are committed to.
