THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.

John 14:16-18 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

A couple of days ago we looked at this same passage. We talked about the Holy Spirit being our Advocate, or Helper, or Comforter. All three words are used in various translations for the first role Jesus mentions. The second title Jesus gives of the Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of truth.” In the New Living Translation (NLT), they chose to says He is the One “who leads into all truth.” In this role the Holy Spirit is connected to Jesus as the Living Word and the Bible as the written Word. The Spirit inspired the writing of the Word and illumines the Word so we may understand it. Imagine if you are a person who enjoys reading and one day you hear that the author of one of your favorite books is going to be near you. You arrange your schedule to go sit and listen as this person explains to you what was behind the writing of a particular book. They give unique insight and explanation of the book. You feel so excited to hear the actual author share about the book you love. That is part of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He is present with us to give us a better understanding of the written will of God—the Bible. He will guide us to greater understanding and application of God’s eternal truth written down in the Holy Bible. Why not choose today to spend time reading the Bible and asking the Holy Spirit to be the Spirit of Truth for you? He wants to guide you into all truth. He wants you to have understanding and wisdom.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I admit my understanding is limited and corrupted by my sin nature. I ask You to teach me today the truths of God’s Word so that I may know and understand the will of God.

“Scroll down to share what you feel God is saying based on today’s reading.”
