THE INNER WAR OF RIGHT AND WRONG
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.
I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In one of the most raw and relatable passages in all of Scripture, Paul gives voice to the agonizing tension every believer experience: the battle between the redeemed spirit and the unredeemed flesh.
As long as we live on this side of eternity in human bodies, this inner struggle remains real. But Paul doesn't leave us trapped frustrated, he points us directly to the ultimate Rescue.
Unpacking the Inner Conflict
1. "I Don’t Really Understand Myself"
Paul makes a candid confession that all of us have felt. It is like a young child who makes a mess and, when asked by a parent why they did it, simply cries, "I don't know!"
Have you ever said or done something in a moment of weakness and immediately asked yourself, "Why did I say that? Why did I react that way?" Paul exposes the perplexing inconsistency of human nature.
2. The Law is Kalos (Good)
Paul reaffirms that there is nothing wrong with God's standard. The Greek word he uses for "good" is kalos, which means beautiful, noble, excellent, and useful. The Law is holy and right; the defect isn't in God’s commands, but in our fallen flesh.
3. "Sin Living in Me"
Paul speaks of "the dwelling-in-me sin." He isn't making cheap excuses or shirking personal responsibility. Rather, he is diagnosing the internal conflict between his spirit’s desire to please God and the lingering impulses of the old sin nature.
4. "Nothing Good Lives in My Sinful Nature"
Paul isn't attacking the human body as inherently evil; he is referring to the fallen sin virus we inherited in Adam. In our own natural ability, apart from the Holy Spirit, we possess zero spiritual capability to produce divine righteousness.
5. The Constant Principle: An Inner War
Paul discovers a daily spiritual law: the moment he sets his heart to do good, the flesh fights back. It is a civil war waged in the mind between old habits and new identity. In our own human willpower, we cannot win this war.
6. The Cry of Desperation: "What a Miserable Person I Am!"
Recognizing his complete inability to defeat sin through fleshly self-discipline, Paul cries out in frustration. Left to ourselves in these mortal bodies, human effort only leads to spiritual exhaustion and defeat.
7. The Glorious Turning Point: "Thank God! The Answer is Jesus!"
Paul doesn't end in despair! He shifts instantly from human misery to divine triumph. The victory over indwelling sin does not come from stricter self-discipline or stronger legalism—the victory is found exclusively in Jesus Christ and the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.
Reflection & Application
Do you accept that God's Law is good, but you cannot keep it alone? Have you stopped trying to conquer old habits through human willpower and started yielding to the Holy Spirit?
Are you discouraged by the inner struggle? Do you realize that feeling a conflict over sin is proof that the Holy Spirit is alive inside you, transforming your desires?
Where are you looking for victory? Are you giving praise to Jesus daily for His finished work on the cross, or are you still relying on your own strength?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I humbly admit that I cannot win this inner war in my own strength. My flesh is weak, and my human willpower is not enough. I desperately need Your divine help every single day.
Thank You that the answer to my struggle isn't stricter rules or human performance, but a deeper surrender to Jesus Christ my Lord. Renew my mind and spirit today through Your Word and Your presence.
When I feel the pull of old habits, Holy Spirit remind me to step out of the weakness of my flesh and lean into the power of Your indwelling Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
