THE PATH OF SALVATION

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands. But faith’s way of getting right with God says, ‘Don’t say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven?” (to bring Christ down to earth). And don’t say, “Who will go down to the place of the dead?” (to bring Christ back to life again).’ In fact, it says, ‘The message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.’ And that message is the very message about faith that we preach:
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, ‘Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.’ Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. For ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
Romans 10:5–13 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Everything in the Old Covenant, the animal sacrifices, the priesthood, the temple services, the sacred festivals—was designed to point forward to the coming Messiah. The Law was meant to show humanity our fallen condition so we would run to a Savior.
Yet tragic missteps occurred: many ended up worshiping the Law itself while rejecting the very Savior it foretold, attempting to achieve righteousness through self-discipline and flawless performance. Paul reminds us that relying on the Law requires keeping every single command perfectly—an impossibility given our inherited sin nature.
Instead, Paul reveals the accessible, life-giving alternative: Righteousness by Faith.
1. The Message of Christ is Near
You don't have to scale the heavens or descend into the deep to find God. You don't need extraordinary human feats or secret knowledge to reach Him.
Paul stresses that the message of grace is right in front of us—it is near, accessible, and already pressing on our hearts and lips. The Gospel brings God down to us where we are.
2. The Invitation is for "Whosoever"
Quoting Isaiah 28:16, Paul reaffirms that God has laid a solid Cornerstone in Zion. Jesus is that Cornerstone.
Salvation is not reserved for an elite few, nor is it restricted by ethnic background or religious lineage. Paul quotes Joel 2:32 to deliver one of the grandest promises in all of Scripture: "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
3. The Twofold Process of Salvation
Paul outlines the core process of salvation in verses 9 and 10, bringing together the inner posture of the spirit and the outer declaration of the mouth:
Believing in Your Heart: Salvation begins as an inner decision of faith. You don't have to understand every complex theological doctrine or have all your questions answered before coming to Christ. You simply step out in trust, believing in your heart that Jesus is the Son of God who rose from the dead.
Confessing with Your Mouth: Faith doesn't remain silent. Scripture teaches that our words carry spiritual power. When God created the universe, He spoke light into existence. In a similar way, speaking out loud that "Jesus is Lord" seals our allegiance.
There is no place in Scripture for "secret saints." True faith naturally overflows into open declaration—telling others what Jesus has done in our lives.
Righteousness by Law vs. Righteousness by Faith
Righteousness by Law | Righteousness by Faith |
Scope: Restricted to religious performance | Scope: Open to "Whosoever" believes |
Basis: Dependent on human work & rules | Basis: Received by faith alone |
Origin: Man-made self-righteousness | Origin: God-given Christ-righteousness |
Outcome: Cannot save; leads to failure | Outcome: Brings eternal salvation |
Action: Striving to obey the Lord | Action: Calling on the Lord |
Fruit: Produces legalistic pride | Fruit: Gives all glory to God |
Reflection & Application
Do you truly believe salvation is available to anyone? Does your heart hold space for even the most broken person to be transformed by grace?
Have you openly declared your faith? Are you open about your relationship with Jesus, or have you been tempted to keep your faith hidden?
Are you resting in what Jesus did? Have you stopped trying to perform for God's approval, choosing instead to daily call upon the name of the Lord?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, thank You for bringing the message of salvation so near to my heart. I declare with my mouth today that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior, and I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead.
Deliver me from any lingering attempt to earn my standing through self-righteousness or human effort. Anchor my life on Jesus, my solid Cornerstone.
Give me the courage and passion to openly share my faith with others. Use my voice to bring hope to those around me, letting them know that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
