WHEN WE ARE PLANTED

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.

John 12:24 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

True life only comes after death!

When Jesus was on the earth He tried to explain to His followers He had to die for life to be released. The disciples wanted a king without a sacrificial death. They wanted an earthly king that would make life on earth better for them.

Jesus knew His purpose in coming to earth was to die for the sins of humanity. Only through His death could there be the gift of life for all humanity.

Our passage today has a double meaning. It is not just about Jesus’ death; it is also about a principle of life. When we are willing to give our life to die for the sake of Christ, we will see new life released through our death.

I don’t believe this is just a literal death—even though some are called to be martyrs for the cause of Christ.  But most of us will never be faced with the choice to be a physical martyr for Christ. Our choice will be more of a daily choice to choose to live for Jesus and put His kingdom and will above our own comfort and desire.

When we are willing to be “planted in the soil” we allow the Spirit of God to receive glory from our life. When you plant a seed, it disappears. In our present world it seems many followers of Christ seek recognition over death. We are willing to serve in God’s kingdom if everyone knows we are serving. We want to make sure there are plenty of pictures taken and videos posted of our work.

I still believe it is what we do in the secret place that really shows up in the long run. Those hours in prayer and intercession that produce God’s character in our lives and releases the Holy Spirit in the lives of others. Those moments when we chose to serve someone else without making a social media post. That moment when we anonymously helped someone in need.

If we are not seeking credit or recognition our actions can suddenly allow God to receive the credit. In the process I believe the Holy Spirit also transforms us from our selfishness to genuine humility. We discover a new level of satisfaction and fulfillment.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me to be willing to be planted in the ground as Your seed to bring Your life to many others. Help me to grow into a plant that produces much fruit for Your kingdom.
