FILLING THE GAPS IN OUR FAITH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“How we thank God for you! Because of you we have great joy as we enter God’s presence. Night and day we pray earnestly for you, asking God to let us see you again to fill the gaps in your faith.”

1 Thessalonians 3:9-10 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Even though Paul received a glowing report about the Thessalonians, he wasn't finished with them. He was still praying "night and day" for the opportunity to see them again. Why? Because he knew that as good as their faith was, there were still "gaps" that needed to be filled.

Here are three things we can learn about filling the gaps in our faith:

1. Let Joy Fuel Your Prayers

When a friend is doing well, that isn't the time to stop praying for them. In my years as a pastor, I’ve noticed that people are often much more earnest in prayer during a crisis than during the good times. We see people at a prayer meeting only when they have a major problem and need the whole church to fast for them. But what if we prayed just as earnestly during the seasons of joy? Consistent prayer in the good times builds the spiritual reservoir we need for the difficult ones.

2. Faith is Not a Solo Project

Even though the Thessalonians were standing firm, Paul wanted to "fill the gaps" in their faith. This reminds us that faith is not something we can fully develop by ourselves. If we aren’t growing, we are sliding backward; there is no such thing as "coasting" in the Christian life. We need authentic relationships that challenge us, stretch us, and help us see God from different angles. Other believers are the "gap-fillers" that God uses to complete His work in us.

3. The Cycle of Growth

Just as I need others to help fill my gaps, I am called to be a "gap-filler" for someone else. Growth is rarely a one-way street. I’ve found that it is nearly impossible to help someone else grow without discovering something new about yourself. When you plant a seed in someone else’s life, you are simultaneously preparing a harvest in your own. Much of your personal maturity is dependent on your willingness to help someone else mature.

Today’s Reflection

  • Prayer Check: Has your prayer life been limited to "crisis mode" lately? Take five minutes today to pray earnestly for someone who is doing well.

  • Gap: Where are the "gaps" in your faith right now? Is there a challenge or a direction God is stretching you toward that you’ve been resisting?

  • Investment: Who is someone "coming up behind you" in the faith? How can you use your experience to help fill a gap in their understanding or walk today?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit please help me to be a person committed to prayer in every season—both the good and the bad. Help me to be humble enough to let others into my life to fill my gaps and make me sensitive enough to be a "gap-filler" for those around me. Amen.
