DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF SELF-WISDOM

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT

What happens when humanity chooses to reject the ultimate authority of God? Paul gives us a stark, unvarnished picture in this section of Romans 1. When a culture turns its back on the Creator, it doesn't stay neutral—it enters a progressive downward spiral.

1. Exchanging Divine Truth for Homemade Idols

Paul writes that in "claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools." The root word Paul uses here for "became fools" (mōrainō) means to become senseless or void of understanding. When we trade God’s wisdom for self-generated "wisdom," we aren't becoming enlightened—we are actively blinding ourselves to reality.

Out of that spiritual blindness, humanity constructs idols to replace the true God:

• In ancient times, people carved images of animals and human figures.

• In modern culture, we construct subtler idols—worshipping wealth, career status, popularity, physical comfort, and personal autonomy.

Whatever we place at the center of our lives in place of God becomes our idol.

2. Given Over to Corruption

Because humanity repeatedly rejects the truth of God revealed through creation and divine revelation, Paul notes three distinct times in this passage that God "gives them over" or abandons them to their own choices.

God essentially says, "If you insist on living apart from My design, I will let you experience the full consequences of your choice."

When humanity discards God’s design, moral and sexual confusion inevitably follows. Paul highlights how sexual relations outside of God's original framework—including same-sex relationships—depart from the Creator's natural order.

The original terms Paul uses for "women" and "men" in verses 26–27 literally mean females and males, pointing directly to the biological reality of how God created humanity. In pastoral counseling, I have met people who attempt to reinterpret these verses to claim they apply only to specific ancient practices rather than homosexual relationships in general. But proper exegesis—reading the plain text in its full biblical context—makes it clear that Paul is describing what happens when human desire attempts to rewrite God's intentional design for human intimacy.

3. The Slippery Slope of Reinterpretation

When we twist Scripture to excuse or accommodate a favorite cultural trend or personal sin, we open the door to widespread moral compromise. Once we abandon God's Word as our objective authority, we step onto a slippery slope where the human mind justifies whatever it desires.

A wise mentor told me years ago: "The human mind has an endless capacity to justify anything it really wants to do."

If we decide that Scripture is malleable and open to being rewritten by modern culture, we lose the steady anchor God gave us to correct and guide our lives. Suddenly, the slide doesn't stop at sexual ethics—Paul's list expands to include greed, envy, malicious behavior, gossip, hate, and deceit. When self becomes God, nothing remains truly wrong if we want it to be right.

The Cure: Submitting to God's Word

The remedy for this downward spiral is simple yet radical: we must yield to the authority of Scripture as it is written.

Culture is constantly shifting, but God’s Word remains absolute and unwavering. The Bible is not a blank canvas for us to repaint according to our preferences; it is the loving, protective boundary given by a Creator who knows what is best for human flourishing.

• Do you view the Bible as your ultimate authority? Is Scripture the final standard for your decisions, or do you find yourself trying to reshape God's Word to fit your personal desires or cultural trends?

• Where are you tempted to compromise? Are there areas in your life where you have tried to justify thoughts, actions, or attitudes that don't line up with God’s explicit design?

• How do you respond when God's Word challenges you? Instead of trying to rewrite the standard when you fall short, are you willing to humbly confess, repent, and let the Holy Spirit align your heart with His truth?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, I ask that You examine my heart and life before I ever attempt to point out the flaws in others. I am not their judge, and I need Your grace every single hour.

Forgive me for the times I have compromised Your truth, rationalized my own mistakes, or placed my comfort above Your Word. Guard my mind from the pride that claims to be wise apart from You.

Give me a humble, obedient heart that yields to the authority of Scripture—even when it challenges my personal desires or runs counter to the culture around me. Bring every area of my life into alignment with Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
