THE PRIORITY OF ALLEGIANCE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“You must not have any other god but me.”
Exodus 20:3 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
I remember in elementary school we would start every single day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. (Some years, we even included the pledge to the Texas flag—it’s a Texas thing!) This daily ritual was a constant reminder of where we placed our loyalty and trust.
As God handed the Ten Commandments down to Moses, the very first instruction dealt directly with this exact issue: our allegiance. As we established last time, God’s heart in these commandments is not to trap us, but to guide us into true, lasting freedom.
He beautifully sets the stage for this first boundary by declaring, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (Exodus 20:2). With that context in mind, let’s look closer at this first "word."
1. The Path to Freedom
Because God created us, He knows exactly what is best for us. Think of it this way: the manufacturer of my washing machine provided a detailed owner’s manual. It explains how to hook it up, how to clean it, how to operate it, and how to troubleshoot problems.
In a sense, God gave us an owner’s manual for humanity flourishing in the Ten Commandments. They weren’t given to enslave us, but to free us to live the best life possible.
My washing machine manual explicitly warns against heavy objects—like bricks—into the washer. Is that because the manufacturer doesn't want me to have clean bricks? No! It’s because there is a much better way to clean a brick, and putting one in the machine will destroy the washer.
God's boundaries operate the same way. When He tells us how to live, He isn't withholding a good time; He is keeping us from destroying the mechanism of our souls.
2. The Question of Protection
When God says, “You must not have any other god but me,” is that a restriction or a protection? If we trust that God’s boundaries are designed for our good, then this command is profoundly protective.
Now, most modern readers might quickly point out that we don't struggle with idols anymore. We don't have golden statues sitting on our mantels that we burn incense to or bow before. But just because we don’t worship carved images doesn't mean we don’t have rival gods in our lives.
An idol is anything that claims the ultimate priority of our time, energy, and affection. Our drive for career success, financial security, a flawless resume, a strong portfolio, political outcomes, perfect children, advanced degrees, or even the "ideal" marriage partner can easily become a functional god. When these things take center stage, they consume all of our creativity, energy, and time.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting success, security, or a healthy family—if our drive for them doesn’t usurp the priority that belongs solely to the living God.
3. A Warning from Jesus
Jesus gave us a sobering warning about the danger of divided loyalties in Matthew 6:
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” — Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
You simply cannot serve two masters. Way back in 1979, Bob Dylan released a famous song called "Gotta Serve Somebody." The lyrics hit on many different areas of culture, but the core truth was pointed out and inescapable: everybody serves something or someone.
The Bible reminds us that we must intentionally choose where to place our allegiance. Jehovah God Almighty will not share His throne with anyone or anything. Ultimately, whatever we serve is what we become enslaved to. It is only when we serve God first that we discover the true, abundant freedom we were created for.
Reflection Questions:
Honestly, evaluate your daily routines. Do you view God's commandments primarily as rigid restrictions, or as loving protections?
Where does your primary allegiance truly lie right now?
Are there any "good things" (success, security, family approval) that you occasionally allow to take the first spot in your heart?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, search my heart and show me any areas of compromise. Help me to make You the absolute first priority of my life. Give me the wisdom and grace to invest my time, talent, and treasure into seeking Your will above all else. Amen
