“I AM”

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!’”
John 8:58 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
When we think about the names and titles given to Jesus, this one is often overlooked—yet it’s one of the most profound. Jesus Himself declared, “I Am.”
This title first appears in Exodus 3:14, when Moses encounters God at the burning bush in the wilderness. Moses had been living in self-imposed exile for forty years after fleeing Egypt. He was tending sheep, far from the life he once knew, and everything about his future seemed uncertain and stalled.
Then comes the burning bush—aflame yet not consumed. Drawn by curiosity, Moses steps closer, and from that moment of wonder the voice of God speaks.
God assures Moses that He has not been forgotten. In fact, God has a new mission for him: he is to return to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to release God’s people. Moses, overwhelmed, asks, “When they ask who sent me, what should I say?”
God’s answer is simple and eternal: “Tell them I Am has sent you.”
From that moment forward, the Lord is known as the Great I Am—a name the Jewish people regarded with deep reverence and holiness.
Then Jesus arrives on the scene and applies that same title to Himself.
This infuriated the religious leaders, who considered His words blasphemy. But it’s only blasphemy if it isn’t true.
We often use the phrase “I am” with a description attached—I am Cindy’s husband, or I am a grandfather of four amazing grandchildren. We need qualifiers to explain who we are.
Jesus didn’t.
He needed no description, no added explanation.
He is complete in Himself.
He is “I Am.”
The child laid in a manger in Bethlehem is the eternal God—I Am wrapped in human flesh.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me grasp more fully the greatness of the Lord Jesus. Fill my heart with awe as I worship during this Christmas season and reflect on who He truly is. Amen.
