GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
Colossians 2:6–7 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul reminds these early believers—and us—that a life anchored in Jesus naturally produces gratitude. When our roots go deep into Christ, what comes out of us reflects His work inside us.
Think about carrying a full cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. If someone bumps into you, whatever fills the cup will spill out. You can’t carry coffee and expect hot chocolate to come out. The contents reveal themselves the moment you’re jostled.
Life bumps us too. Pressures, disappointments, and people collide with us unexpectedly, and something spills out. At times it may be anger or frustration. Other times it may be peace or joy. Whatever fills our hearts eventually shows itself.
Paul says that when our lives are grounded in Christ, thankfulness becomes the natural overflow. Instead of fixating on what’s lacking or how life has been unfair, our words turn toward God’s goodness and grace. Gratitude becomes the instinctive response, even when circumstances shake us.
It’s simple to give thanks when everything is going well. The challenge—and the mark of spiritual maturity—is learning to give thanks “in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). One truth that helps anchor a grateful heart is the promise of Romans 8:28: God is working all things together for the good of those who love Him. Not just the pleasant moments—all things.
As we walk with Him longer, many of us discover that some of our deepest growth comes through hard seasons. Knowing God is at work, even in difficulty, helps us give thanks not just after the trial but during it.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, thank You for continually working in my life and for filling me with a grateful heart. Remove anything in me—bitterness, anger, jealousy, revenge, or greed—that crowds out thankfulness. Help my life be rooted in Jesus so that gratitude naturally flows from me. Amen.
