SPEND QUIET MOMENTS WITH JESUS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. Everyone returned to their ancestral towns to register. Because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he traveled from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He took with him Mary, who was engaged to him and now expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
Luke 2:1–7 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
It’s Christmas. Around the world, people pause—if only briefly—to remember the birth of God’s Son in Bethlehem. Gifts are exchanged, tables are filled, and laughter echoes through homes as families and friends gather.
However, that first Christmas looked very different.
Times were hard. Israel lived under Roman occupation. The people felt powerless, weary, and forgotten. Many had lost sight of God’s promises, and the hope of a coming Messiah felt like a distant memory.
And then—God came.
Not with thunder or armies. Not with a crown or a palace. God came wrapped in human flesh. A baby wrapped in cloth and laid in a manger. The Son of God entered the world helpless, dependent, and poor.
This wasn’t what anyone expected.
The people longed for a conquering king—someone who would overthrow Rome and restore their nation’s glory. Instead of a warrior, they were given a newborn. Instead of a throne, a feeding trough. Instead of wealth and power, obscurity and humility.
Perhaps God was telling us something profound.
God is approachable.
He did not remain distant in the ivory towers of heaven. He stepped into the mess of humanity. Into uncertainty. Into weakness. Into ordinary life.
Babies don’t intimidate us. They don’t demand credentials or accomplishments. Anyone can draw near to a baby.
In the same way, Jesus is approachable by all. You don’t have to be perfect, impressive, or successful in the world’s eyes to come to Him. You simply come.
That first Christmas, Jesus welcomed lowly shepherds and educated Magi alike. And He still welcomes everyone today.
This Christmas, pause. Step away from the noise, the busyness, and the expectations. Spend a few quiet moments with Jesus—the God who came near.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me recognize the beauty of God’s Son, born in a stable for me. Help me to pause, draw near, and talk with Jesus this Christmas. Amen.
