COMPASSIONATE
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in their suffering. Yet Jerusalem says, “The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.” “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!”

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In Exodus 34:6 God uses the word “compassionate” as the first description of Himself. Let’s take a closer look at this part of God’s character.
The Hebrew word for compassion is “rakhum.” Interestingly, this word is related to the Hebrew word for womb, “rehkem.” This helps us understand that compassion is a powerful way to describe the strong emotional bond between a parent and their child.
Throughout scripture God is portrayed as a compassionate parent. When Jesus came to the earth, He embodied the compassion of God. He healed the sick, cared for the hurting, and embraced the wounded and outcast of society. Then, in the greatest act of compassion Jesus gave up His own life on the cross to free humanity from the control and consequences of sin.
As followers of Jesus we are called on to display this same compassion for one another. We are to bring healing to the sick, care to the hurting, and embrace the wounded and outcast of society. We are to be walking examples of God’s compassion.

Holy Spirit, I ask You to help me allow Your compassion to flow through my life. Help me today to show Your compassion to someone in my world.
