WE CAN’T TRUST OUR FEELINGS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

Philippians 3:18-19 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

“Their god is their appetite.”

What a powerful indictment, and what a powerful way to define much of our present culture. We seem to be a culture who allow our physical appetite to determine our behavior.

Whether it is physical hunger, sexual desires, or striving for success we allow our wants to determine and justify our behavior. We claim to be followers of Christ, but we reject any part of His Word that confronts our selfishness or fleshly desires.

I remember the line from an old song, “How can it be so wrong if it feels so right?” The problem is our feelings are messed up. Our feelings have been corrupted by a sin nature. We can’t trust our feelings.

Let me say that again, “we can’t trust our feelings.”

If my feelings become my guide there are days, I wouldn’t get out of bed. I wouldn’t read my bible, have personal prayer time, or care for others.

Paul tells us in another passage, “I beat my body and make it my slave.” This is the opposite of allowing our appetite to be our god.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit please help me to control my appetite. Help me to be led by the Spirit of God not by my human desires. I want to live with the mindset of eternity not the temporary thrills of earth.
