IS THIS REALLY FROM GOD?

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”
1 John 4:1 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
How do we really know if a message we hear is truly from God?
Not every voice we hear in our minds or from other people is the Holy Spirit speaking. Sometimes it’s our own wants and fears talking. Sometimes it’s the enemy trying to deceive, distract, or discourage us. And sometimes, people—even well-meaning people—may try to push us in a direction for their own reasons.
This is why John tells us to “test the spirits.” God doesn’t want us to be gullible. He wants us to be wise, alert, and discerning.
So how do we test what we hear?
1. Does it align with God’s Word?
God’s Spirit will never contradict God’s Word. The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:21). So, if the message goes against clear biblical teaching, it’s not from Him. If you want to hear the Spirit more clearly, you must know the Bible more deeply.
2. Does it align with God’s Character?
God’s voice sounds like His heart. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23)—reflects who He is. If the message you’re hearing stirs up fear, pride, manipulation, or selfish ambition, it’s not His voice.
3. Does it align with God’s Family?
God often confirms His word through mature believers. Proverbs reminds us there is safety in wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14). When you’re unsure, share what you’re sensing with a few trusted, spiritually mature people—people who know God’s Word and walk closely with Him. Don’t lean on advice from people who have no track record of hearing from God.
Testing Takes Time
The word “test” here is like testing precious metals—examining them carefully to see if they are genuine. It takes time, effort, and sometimes waiting patiently before acting. Don’t rush. If it’s really God, it will stand the test.
A Gentle Challenge
Is there a word you sense God is speaking to you right now?
Hold it up to these three tests:
• Does it line up with Scripture?
• Does it reflect God’s character?
• Is it affirmed by God’s people?
When you do this, you can move forward with confidence, knowing you’re following the true voice of your Shepherd.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, teach me to discern Your voice. Protect me from deception, confusion, or distraction. Help me test every message I hear so that I can walk in Your truth. Speak clearly, Lord—I’m listening.
