REMOVING FEAR FROM OUR LIVES
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1:7 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of Satan’s most predictable tactics in spiritual warfare is the deployment of fear.
Fear is a highly effective weapon for the enemy because it paralyzes our faith, isolates us from community, and completely distorts our perception of reality. As the “prideful ruler of the air,” the enemy loves to use the airwaves—social media, constant news cycles, and cultural noise—to pump a steady stream of anxiety and dread into our hearts about the state of the world.
My wife, Cindy, and I once had some friends who kept a national news channel playing in their home around the clock. Over time, that constant intake of negativity changed how they lived. They installed triple locks on all their doors and became terrified to leave their house after dark, entirely convinced that something terrible was about to happen to them. They were prisoners in their own home.
To win the battle over anxiety, we must stand on two foundational truths:
1. Fear Is Not From your Heavenly Father
Paul explicitly states that fear and timidity do not originate from God. Now, there is a healthy, instinctual fear that keeps you from stepping off a ledge or touching a hot stove—that is a gift from God for your physical protection.
The fear Paul is exposing here is a paralyzing, toxic spiritual dread. It is a mindset that freezes you in place and attempts to sabotage you from stepping into the divine destiny God has mapped out for your life. If it brings torment, restriction, and paralysis, it is not from heaven.
2. Perfect Love Forcefully Conquers Fear
Instead of fear, God has filled the believer with three specific weapons: power, love, and a disciplined mind.
Think of fear exactly like darkness. Scientifically speaking, you don’t measure darkness; you measure light. Light is a physical reality composed of electromagnetic waves and photons that can be precisely measured. Darkness, on the other hand, doesn't exist on its own, it is merely the total absence of light.
When you allow the Holy Spirit to flood your heart with the love of God, it is like flipping a massive light switch. The darkness of fear simply cannot stay. When you fully grasp that the finished work of Jesus on the cross paid for every single one of your sins, you realize you are fully accepted by the Creator of the universe.
The Apostle John beautifully describes this dynamic:
“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” (1 John 4:18)
Pay close attention to that word “expels.” In the original Greek, the word is ekballo, which literally means “to drive out, cast out, or throw away with violent force.” It’s the same word used when Jesus cast out demons. Fear may throw a loud, intimidating tantrum, but God's love is an active, aggressive force. It doesn't politely ask fear to leave; it forcefully evicts it from your soul.
Personal Application Questions:
What am I allowing to shape my atmosphere? Look around your home and your daily habits. Are you inadvertently allowing fear to be planted in your life through an over-consumption of negative media, news, or toxic conversations?
How am I intentionally turning on the light? What practical routines do you have in place to daily remind yourself of the immense, unconditional love God has for you?
Am I still expecting punishment? Do you secretly view God as a harsh judge waiting for you to fail, or are you resting in the perfect love that Jesus secured for you at the cross?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I invite You to flood my heart right now with a fresh, overwhelming revelation of God’s perfect love. I take authority over every spirit of fear, anxiety, and timidity that has been trying to paralyze my life, and I command it to leave in Jesus' name. Fill those empty spaces with Your supernatural power, Your unconditional love, and a sound, self-disciplined mind today. Amen.
