REMAIN PERSISTENT IN PRAYER
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”
Ephesians 6:18 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
When the Apostle Paul concludes his extensive passage on the Armor of God in Ephesians 6, he immediately follows it with a powerful charge to pray.
There is an undeniable, deep connection between spiritual warfare and prayer. In fact, prayer is the very atmosphere in which our spiritual armor functions. To understand how prayer works as a weapon of warfare, it helps to look at the original Greek word Paul used.
The Greek word for prayer here is proseuche. It is formed by combining two distinct words:
Pros: A preposition meaning “toward, facing, or in the presence of.” It implies intimate, face-to-face contact with another person.
Euche: A word meaning “a wish, a vow, or a deep desire.”
When you bring these two concepts together, proseuche means bringing your deepest desires directly into the face-to-face presence of God. In ancient Greek literature, this word was used exclusively in a sacred, religious context when addressing the divine. It is an act that is inherently holy and worshipful.
Because of this, the primary emphasis of biblical prayer is on relationship rather than request. It carries the picture of positioning ourselves to interact with God’s holy character, rather than just handing Him a shopping list of our needs.
Too often, we treat prayer as a "to-do" list for God, complete with our own specific instructions on exactly how and when we expect Him to act. But God is not our errand boy, nor is He our servant. He is the Sovereign, Almighty Creator of the universe.
True prayer must always begin with an element of worship and awe for who God is. We must remember that our only right to approach His throne is because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross and the cleansing power of His blood.
We do not approach the throne of grace to demand our own will or our own way. We come to pull heaven down to earth. We are seeking His kingdom, not our own. And when we successfully align our human will with His perfect will, we can have absolute confidence that what we ask for will be granted.
Personal Application Questions:
How do I approach God's presence? Do I enter prayer with a heart of humility and worship, or do I jump straight into demanding, controlling, or bargaining?
Are my requests aligned with God’s heart? Am I genuinely seeking His kingdom to come and His will to be done in my current situation, or am I just looking for an easy escape?
Is my heart free from known, unconfessed sin? Scripture reminds us that He is a holy God. Is there anything you need to lay down and clear up with Him before you enter the battle today?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, I ask for Your help as I learn how to pray effectively. Search my heart and show me if there is anything blocking an intimate, face-to-face relationship with You today. Give me the courage to quickly confess and repent any known sin. Help me to step humbly before Your throne, fully confident that as I align my desires with Yours, You will release Your authority and power on earth. Amen
