SING PRAISE TO OUR LORD

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: “Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever!” At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.”

TODAY’S THOUGHT

The Bible teaches us a radical truth: Worship is warfare.

To fully appreciate today's scripture, we need to look at the context. Several enemy nations had combined forces to launch a massive, surprise attack against Judah. Recognizing the crisis, King Jehoshaphat wisely called for a nationwide fast, gathered the people at the Temple, and stood before them to pray.

In response, God sent a prophetic word through a man named Jahaziel, telling the people not to be afraid or discouraged, “for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chronicles 20:15).

Early the next morning, as the army marched out, Jehoshaphat deployed a highly unconventional battle plan: he placed the choir at the very front of the combat troops to sing and praise the Lord. Scripture records that at the exact moment they began to sing, the Lord threw the enemy armies into total confusion, causing them to turn on and destroy one another. Judah didn't even have to lift a sword.

There is supernatural power in intentional praise. Here is what happens when we choose to become people of praise in the middle of our battles:

1. It Refocuses Us on God

When we are blindsided by problems and struggles, our instinct is to hyper-focus on them. We become consumed with finding a solution, playing out worst-case scenarios, and making the crisis the centerpiece of every conversation.

Praise forces our focus to shift from the size of the problem to the scale of our God. A wise mentor taught me early in my ministry: “You will either have big problems and a little God, or a big God and little problems.” Whichever one you focus on is the one that will grow in your estimation. Praise magnifies our view of God.

2. It Displaces Our Fear

Once our focus is successfully corrected, anxiety and worry begin to lose their grip. Faith arises because we remember that with God, absolutely nothing is impossible.

Faith and fear simply cannot occupy the same space; one will always eventually drive out the other. While we may still feel a wave of fear, active faith overrides it. Worship releases heaven's peace into our current circumstances, reminding our souls that the Prince of Peace is living inside of us.

3. It Invites the Supernatural

Praise builds a bridge of faith that allows God to step into our situations and do what we humanly cannot. God dwells in the atmosphere of worship. When we choose to praise Him in a dark place, we create a landing strip for miracles.

We see this in King Jehoshaphat’s story, and we see it again in Acts 16 with Paul and Silas. Locked in the deepest, darkest dungeon of a Roman prison, bleeding and bound in stocks, they chose to sing praises to God at midnight. Suddenly, a massive earthquake shook the foundations, the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains fell off.

Bringing It Home

How do we practically apply this to our daily spiritual warfare?

We must make praise a lifestyle, not just a Sunday morning ritual. Don't wait for a church setting or a worship leader to prompt you. Build it into your daily personal devotional time.

Personally, I dedicate a major portion of my prayer time to verbally declaring the names of the Lord and thanking Him for who He is. Every day, I declare: “Lord, You are my righteousness, my healer, my provider, my peace, and my victory banner.” I also love to turn my car into a sanctuary by singing along to worship music while driving—usually when I’m the only one in the car!

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, please teach me how to become a true person of praise. Help me to build consistent, daily habits of worship that outlast my changing moods. When battles arise and pressures mount, give me the grace to immediately focus on Your unlimited power rather than my limited problems. I sing Your praises today. Amen.
