TIME FOR SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.

Luke 5:16 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

Jesus was fully divine and fully human. When Jesus came to earth, He laid aside His divinity and chose to live as a human with the limitations of a human body.

The miracles and teachings of Jesus were the result of His humanity operating the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised His followers that the same work He did they could also do—and they were fully human.

The secret to Jesus’ miracles and ministry was not that He was the divine Son of God—the secret was in His habit of regularly withdrawing from the crowds to connect with His Heavenly Father. Jesus had a habit of spending time with the Holy Spirit to refresh His physical body and keep Himself in alignment with God’s will and plan.

As followers of Christ, we have to develop regular habits of daily retreating from the noise of our world in order to hear the still small voice of God. Daily we must have time to read the Bible and pray. These moments are crucial to keep our spirit, soul, and body in alignment with the will of God.

My wife has learned the importance of daily quiet time for me. Over the years there have been moments when she would tell me, “You need to get away from an hour to connect with God.” She knew my attitude would get bad when I got so busy with projects that I was cutting my quiet time.

For me it always seems the early morning has been my best time to pause and start my day with some Bible reading, writing, and prayer time. I find that the more I have to do the more important it is to start with time in the Holy Spirit.

I am much more productive in my day when I give the first of my day to spend time with my Heavenly Father. It is like God quickens my thinking and gives me favor with my work when I give Him the first part of my day.

I have friends that prefer to connect with God at midday or in the evening. I don’t think there is a specific time that is more spiritual than another time. It usually will depend on your personal preference. But the key is to have a daily habit of spending time with God through His Word and prayer.

If Jesus needed daily time away from people and problems of life, you and I also need daily time with the Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me to daily connect with You. Help me to listen to Your voice and open my ears to hear what You are saying. Help me to calm my brain and body so that I can receive Your wisdom.
