LET’S FILTER OUR SPEECH

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
Ephesians 4:29 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
When Paul tells us to stop using "foul" language, he isn't just talking about "cuss words." Paul uses the Greek word sapros, which refers to rotting fruit or spoiled fish. He’s talking about any speech that has the "scent of decay,” sarcasm that cuts, gossip that stains, or complaints that drain the life out of a room.
1. The "Rotten" Speech (The Old Rags)
Think about a piece of fruit left in the sun. It doesn't just look bad; it smells, and it eventually infects everything touching it.
Sarcasm: "Flesh-tearing" words designed to belittle.
Gossip: Spreading the "rot" of someone else's failure.
Complaining: Polluting the atmosphere with a lack of gratitude.
2. The "Filter" Test
Paul gives us a 3-point inspection for every word that leaves our lips. Before you speak (or hit "send" on that text), run it through this filter:
Is it Good? Does this reflect the character of Christ?
Is it Helpful? Does this solve a problem or just vent a frustration?
Is it Encouraging? Does the person hearing this feel "built up" or "torn down"?
3. The "Grace" Result
The goal of our speech is to "give grace to those who hear." Our words should be like a gift, something that adds value to the listener's life.
The "24-Hour Mouth Fast"
This week, try a "Speech Audit." Every time you are about to say something "sapros" (rotten), stop and replace it with something "oikodomē" (building up).
Instead of: "I can't believe they messed up again..."
Try: "How can I help them get it right next time?"
TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I ask You to set a guard over my mouth today. Forgive me for the "rotten" words I've allowed to decay my relationships. Help me to use my breath to build others up and give grace to everyone I encounter. Let the words of my mouth be pleasing to You. Amen.
