ARE YOU DISTRACTED?
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Two sisters with two different set of priorities. Martha is all about being the perfect host with a big dinner. Then there was Mary, the sister who preferred to sit and listen to Jesus instead of helping with the meal.
Verse forty sounds like a lot of people I know, "Martha was distracted." Life can be a distraction--there will always be meetings to attend, people to see, appointments to keep, errands to run, and something to fix. These things must be done. But they can become a distraction to the main purpose of life--a personal, intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
In my life I find it is not the bad things that distract me so much. Those are easy to spot and remove. But there are the good things that demand time and energy. These good things tend to sap our energy and cause frustration, disappointment, and even resentment. I must work daily at maintaining a personal time with my Lord.
How is your time with Jesus? Are you distracted?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit I ask for Your help in renewing my priority of time at the feet of Jesus. Help me not to be distracted from listening to Your Word and spending time in prayer. Enable me to learn to focus on what is most important.
