ALERT AND CLEARHEADED

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded... But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation. For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us... So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:6-11 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul is giving us a spiritual "wake-up call." He knows that it’s easy to drift into a spiritual fog where we just go through the motions. To prevent that drift, he gives us three specific instructions for staying sharp:
1. Shake Off the Cobwebs
We’ve all had those mornings when we wake up and need a moment to clear the fog from our heads. Paul warns us not to let that fog settle into our spiritual lives. We cannot afford to be complacent or lazy. We must stay "clearheaded" because we have an enemy who is like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Being alert means being ready for God to work through you at a moment's notice.
2. Guard Your Mind with Confidence
The moment you invite Jesus to be your Lord, you are forgiven and sealed by the Holy Spirit. However, Satan will constantly try to bring "cobwebs" of condemnation and doubt into your mind. This is why you must wear the "helmet" of the confidence of your salvation. You are saved because of what Christ did, not because of how you feel today. When you keep that helmet on, you protect your thoughts from the lies that say you aren't good enough or that God is angry with you.
3. The Power of Mutual Building
Paul reminds us that we are strong together. God didn't save us to be isolated trophies; He saved us to be part of a building project. We need people who will hold up our hands when we are tired, and others need us to do the same for them. Every conversation is an opportunity to either tear down or build up. As "children of the light," our default setting should be encouragement.
Today’s Reflection
Check: In what area of your spiritual life have you become a bit "sleepy" or complacent? What is one step you can take today to re-engage your heart?
Helmet: Are you listening to the "voice of condemnation" today? Take a moment to adjust your helmet and remind yourself that God chose to save you, not to pour out His anger on you.
Construction: Who is one person you can intentionally "build up" today with a text, a call, or a kind word?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me stay awake and clearheaded today. Teach me Your Word so that I can replace wrong thoughts with Your truth. Help me to find—and be—the encouragement that the Body of Christ needs. Thank You for the confidence of my salvation. Amen.
