WE GRIEVE WITH HOPE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul shifts to one of the most important themes of his letter: how we face the reality of death. He doesn't offer a shallow "cheer up" message; instead, he offers a profound perspective that changes how we process loss.
1. Permission to Grieve
Notice that Paul does not say we shouldn't grieve. I knew a pastor who once taught that Christians shouldn't shed a tear at funerals—until his own father passed away. Suddenly, his theology met reality. Grief is the natural human reaction to love and loss. We aren't necessarily sad for those who have gone to be with the Lord; we are sad for ourselves because our world has forever changed. Being a believer doesn't mean you stop feeling; it means you process those feelings differently.
2. An Anchored Hope
While we do grieve, we do not grieve like those "who have no hope." Our sorrow is not a bottomless pit. It is anchored in the fact that Jesus conquered death. The "sting" of death is gone because we know that for the believer, death is not a period; it is only a comma in the sentence of life. Our loved ones are free from pain, doctors, and sorrow—and one day, we will be reunited in the presence of the Lord.
3. The Power of the Resurrection
Everything hinges on the resurrection. Because Jesus rose from the dead, we have the absolute confidence that we will too. The resurrection proved that Jesus is exactly who He said He is. It reminds us that while everything on this side of eternity—the hurts, losses, the sicknesses—is temporary, you are eternal. The resurrection turns our "goodbye" into "see you later."
Today’s Reflection
The Permission: Are you allowing yourself (or those around you) the space to grieve, or have you felt pressured to "act spiritual" by hiding your pain?
The Anchor: In your current season of struggle or loss, are you looking at the temporary "comma" or the eternal "hope"?
The Outlook: How would your perspective on today's problems change if you truly embraced the reality that you are an eternal being destined for a glorious reunion?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit, help me to mourn those who mourn without judgment. Teach me to navigate my own seasons of loss with honesty and grace. Strengthen my faith in the resurrection of Jesus and help me to live every day full of the hope that only You can provide. Amen.
