HONOR AND PEACE

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other. Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.”

1 Thessalonians 5:12-15 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

As Paul begins to close this letter, he switches to rapid-fire commands. He wants the Thessalonians to know that their witness to the world isn't just about what they believe; it’s about how they behave toward one another.

1. The Principle of Honor

There is a profound spiritual power in honor. When Jesus went to His hometown, He was limited in the miracles He could perform because the people refused to honor Him. Paul instructs us to show "great respect and wholehearted love" to our spiritual leaders. Honor isn't about the person’s perfection; it’s about recognizing their position and their work. When we live with a heart of honor—toward our parents, our leaders, and our elders—it releases God's blessing and favor into our lives.

2. The Pursuit of Peace

Paul says simply: “live peacefully with each other.” In our world today, many people seem to love “stirring the pot.” Whether it’s in person or on social media, there’s a constant temptation to gripe, argue, or respond to every "stupid post." But as followers of Christ, we don't have to attend every argument we're invited to. Choosing peace means knowing when to speak, when to ignore, and when to let go.

3. A Portfolio of Care

God never intended for us to be isolated. We are called to be in authentic relationships where we take responsibility for one another. This care looks different depending on the need:

  • Warning laziness: Helping people get moving toward their purpose.

  • Encouraging the timid: Helping others find the courage to step out of their comfort zone.

  • Tender care for the weak: Showing compassion to those who are struggling.

  • Patience for everyone: Giving people the room to grow at their own pace. Finally, we must refuse the urge to "get even." We don't pay back evil for evil; we overcome evil by doing good.

Today’s Reflection

  • The Honor Check: Is there a leader or a parent in your life whom you have been critical of lately? How can you show them "great respect and wholehearted love" today?

  • The Peace Filter: Before you post that comment or send that text, ask yourself: "Is this contributing to peace, or is it just stirring the pot?"

  • The Action: Who in your circle needs your specific type of care today? Do they need a "nudge" (the lazy), a "cheer" (the timid), or "tender care" (the weak)?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, help me to reflect Your peace in every interaction today. Teach me to honor the leaders You have placed in my life. Give me the discernment to know how to care for those around me—whether they need a firm word or a tender touch. Forgive me for any desire to "get even" and help me to respond with Your goodness instead. Amen.
