ENCOURAGE AND CARE FOR EACH OTHER

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

Romans 14:19 NLT

TODAY’S THOUGHT

As I read this passage today, I was struck by the comparison in the early church with the culture today. Paul addresses believers who had various opinions about food, drink, and holy days. They were separated over their views.

Paul addressed the issue of our responsibility to encourage “one another” and care for “each other.” The terms “one another” and “each other” appear over fifty times in the New Testament as a testimony to the importance of recognizing we are connected.

Our aim should be “harmony.” That doesn’t mean we will all think alike or vote alike. But we are responsible to “build each other up.” We are responsible for each other.

The ability to live in harmony with people who have a difference of opinion is a true sign of spiritual maturity. I can accept and respect you as a person even if I disagree with your choice or lifestyle. Harmony should not be based on approval but acceptance.

Don’t tell me I have to approve and agree with your choices. I will not force you to approve or agree with my choices. But I will accept the fact you have the right to make your choice. I hope you will accept the fact I have the same right.

Perhaps we could focus more on where we agree than on where we disagree. Unfortunately, because of past hurts people project our disagreement as an attack or condemnation when it is neither. It is simply

We need the Holy Spirit to help us bring harmony into the body of Christ. We lose our right to impact our world when we spend our time and energy attacking instead of having meaningful conversation.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit help me to display love, joy, peace, and patience in my attitude towards everyone. Help me to choose my words wisely. Help me not to attack or label others.
