POINT PEOPLE TO JESUS

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

"Just as the prophet Isaiah had written: 'Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, "Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!"'..."

Mark 1:2–8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT

In almost every city, you can find people standing on busy street corners holding advertising signs. Some flip and spin them with impressive skill, while others wear attention-grabbing costumes. Whatever their tactic, the goal is always the same: get drivers to stop, pay attention, and look where the sign is pointing.

John the Baptist was, in many ways, God’s ultimate sign twirler. Everything about his life was designed to interrupt the status quo and point people directly to Jesus.

Looking closely at Mark’s description, four key observations stand out:

Key Observations

1. John was Called by God

Hundreds of years before John took his first breath, the prophet Isaiah foretold his arrival. John’s personality, location, and timing were not accidental; he was intentionally placed by God at a pivotal moment in human history.

2. John had a Clear Message

John didn't offer vague spiritual advice or preach outward rule-keeping. He called people to true repentance—a genuine turning away from sin and back toward God for forgiveness—followed by baptism as a public declaration. His message cut straight to the heart, offering real forgiveness rather than religious routine.

3. John was Unapologetically Different

Wearing camel hair, wearing a leather belt, and eating locusts and wild honey made John stand out immediately. God gave John a unique lifestyle to break through the spiritual noise of his generation. Being set apart didn't make him weird for the sake of it; it made him effective for God's specific purpose.

4. John Always Pointed to Jesus

Despite drawing crowds from all over Judea, John never tried to build a platform for himself. He openly declared that he wasn't even worthy to perform the lowest task of a slave—untying Jesus' sandals. His deep humility kept the spotlight firmly where it belonged: on the Messiah.

Questions for Reflection

  • Purpose: Do I recognize that God placed me in this exact generation on purpose?

  • Message: Am I clear on Good News, and can I explain it simply to others?

  • Identity: Am I willing to stand out for Christ rather than just fitting in with the crowd?

  • Focus: Does the way I live my life ultimately point people toward Jesus or toward myself?

TODAY’S PRAYER

Holy Spirit, remind me today of Your purpose for my life. Don't let me get so caught up in the daily routine that I forget why You put me here.

Give me the words and courage to share Your Good News clearly. Help me to be comfortable in the unique person You created me to be, without fearing what others think.

May I use my time, talents, and resources to always point others to Jesus. Amen
