CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:2 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Willpower alone is never enough to effectively change our lives. Let me illustrate this thought. Imagine you are on a boat and the autopilot is programed to steer the boat east. As you travel along you decide you want to go north. What do you do?
Option one is to physically take over the steering of the boat and force the boat to turn to the north. Because you are fighting against the programmed autopilot you must constantly be working hard to stay on a north route. Eventually you will get tired and release your grip on the wheel and immediately the boat will turn to the east.
Option two is to reprogram the autopilot. You change the program so that the autopilot steers the boat to the north. You aren’t having to constantly hold the steering wheel or fight the boat. You have a new program running the boat.
This is the picture of our lives. We see an area that needs to change—overeating, disorganized, always late, bad habit, etc.—and decide we will change. We put together a plan to overcome that behavior. For a while our plan works. But it is a daily battle fighting the previous pattern of behavior.
The only way to effectively change your lives is by “changing the way you think.” That is what Paul tells us in our passage today. Every attitude and action in our lives begins with a thought. If my thinking changes, my attitudes, and actions change.
Paul says we need to let God transform us into a new person by “changing the way you think.” The Holy Spirit works in us to change the way we think. When we yield to God’s Spirit, we begin to have different priorities and passions. Our autopilot is reprogrammed.
This is why it is so important to daily spend time in with the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, worship, and prayer. Every time I commit time to God’ I am allowing Him to reprogram my autopilot.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Holy Spirit help me to have the right program running in my head. Help me to allow You to be my programmer. Help me realize when I am allowing the world to impact my autopilot.
