WHAT THE LAW COULD NOT DO
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.”
Romans 8:3–4 NLT
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Having triumphantly declared that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), Paul now explains how this freedom was legally and spiritually accomplished. He contrasts the powerlessness of human rule-keeping with the glorious, all-sufficient work of Christ and the Holy Spirit.
1. The Law Was Powerless Through the Flesh
Paul reminds us that while the Law of Moses was holy and good (Romans 7:12), it lacked the power to save anyone. Why? Because of the weakness of our sinful nature.
Simply knowing what is right does not give us the strength to perform it. Human self-discipline can carry us through external routines for a season, but it can never cure the deep infection of the sin virus. The Law can diagnose our sickness, but it can never provide the medicine.
2. Jesus Did What the Law Could Not Do
Where human effort failed, divine grace stepped in: "God did what the law could not do."
Father God sent His Son, Jesus, into the human experience—taking on a real body like ours yet remaining completely without sin. On the cross, Jesus became the ultimate, substitutionary sacrifice:
He paid our full debt.
He satisfied every just requirement of God’s holy Law.
He declared an end to sin's legal authority over our lives.
The penalty has been completely wiped out because Jesus paid the wage in full.
3. Daily Deliverance Through the Holy Spirit
While Christ’s death provided our legal freedom, our daily experience of that freedom happens as we follow the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit deposits both the desire and the ability to please God into our hearts. When we are born again, our inner desires shift. Some old habits vanish instantly, while other areas require ongoing transformation as we grow in grace.
Spiritual maturity is simply developing a sensitivity to the gentle "nudge" of the Holy Spirit. We cultivate that sensitivity through three vital spiritual anchors:
The Word of God: Reading and meditating on Scripture so our minds are trained to recognize God’s voice.
The Spirit of God: Spending unhurried time in prayer and worship, allowing His presence to align our hearts.
The Family of God: Surrounding ourselves with mature believers who have learned to walk in step with the Spirit.
Zero Room for Pride
We can take zero credit for our spiritual progress. Salvation was fully purchased by Jesus on the cross, and daily victory is entirely energized by the Holy Spirit. Our role is simple: surrender and follow.
Reflection & Application
Are you relying on self-discipline or Spirit-empowerment? Are you trying to overcome temptation through human willpower, or are you yielding to the inner power of the Holy Spirit?
How is your spiritual hearing? Are you making daily room to sense the "nudge" of the Spirit through Scripture, prayer, and Christian fellowship?
Are you resting in Christ's finished work? Do you live with the quiet confidence that the requirements of the Law have been fully satisfied for you in Jesus?
TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming in human flesh to do what the Law could never do. Thank You for paying my full debt on the cross and ending sin's control over my life.
Holy Spirit, I welcome You as my constant Teacher, Guide, and Strength. Forgive me for the times I rely on my own human effort or self-discipline to live righteously.
Increase my sensitivity to Your voice. As I immerse myself in Your Word, Your presence, and Your church, teach me to follow Your gentlest nudges so that my daily life brings glory to my Father in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
